Don't quote me on this, my understanding is the only change is, instead of starting with Rand's pov as he and Tam head to Emonds Field, the TV show will start with Moraine's pov, possibly starting with the prophecy she and Siuan heard. . . It's just a change of pov at the very beginning.

I think they're trying to preserve some of the mystery for non-readers about who the Dragon Reborn is.

Well, my thing about that is, in the anime fandom, there are some shows that you can tell you the main character is going to be, because they have the weirdest hair.

Rand and his ginger self sticks out like a sore thumb in the Two Rivers.

Hahaha! so true *Ichigo flashbacks*

But my feeling is, it won't just be bout an element of "surprise" as too who the Dragon is. It's just a better way to open a TV series. The books work, but it starts fairly slowly, I mean, not really but we have such a short time to capture the new audience, introducing the power, Aes Sedai, Warders and a prophecy will get the easily distracted caught faster than one black coated rider on a country road. . . . :cheeseeni:

Plus, especially with Amazon's new Lord of the Rings show, fans might see that as just trying to be a LotR copy. Which, to be fair, he did follow that model for the first book or two.

That's a good point. :) The point of a tv show is to make the fan base grow and attract new fans, so piecing it all together from different perspectives and angles is a good way to do that.

He did, he did. :rofl I hope there's some kind of forgiveness, if that is how they start to see it. Tolkien kind of provided the model for stories and fantasy worlds for quite a chunk of the genre.

Yes, people can't get picky about that. It's not like there are Elves and Hobbits and all. Not even real dragons!

Also. . . There's a LotR show on Amazon???!!??!!!??

Re : Moraine being the focus.

I don't like that choice, the "Mystery" of who the Dragon Reborn is, was that even supposed to be a Mystery at all? Unless they are going to do whole episodes dedicated to what Mat and Perrin are doing on Winternight it is pretty clear that Rand is the main character, and even then..only one of the 3 have a "World Shaking" revelation during that night.

The Mystery of Moraine, her motivations and just how much trust the Trio should put in her was a far more interesting thing than Who Rand is..and ruining that by giving Moraine the spotlight will be a huge disservice to her as a character and the plot as a whole.

You make a good point Ryu! I hadn't thought of the mystery of Moraine's motivations being removed spoiling that aspect for new viewers. It's been so long since I've read the start not knowing the who, what and why of her.

Is this a defo change? I haven't been keeping up other than what's posted here so I don't know what's confirmed and what's rumour. . . :look:

I started reading with New Spring, so I never got any mystery from Moraine. Maybe it would have been a different experience if I'd read in publication order? But I never felt like I missed out on something.
Plus, I didn't realize that the action wasn't going to follow her through the rest of the series, so when EotW opened with Rand, I was too busy wondering about Moraine to get that he was the Dragon Reborn until way too late.

Yep, with a September 2019 start of production, we should definitely start to see at least some casting news by the start of summer, maybe around June. Hopefully we'll get a fun summer as casting news starts trickling in. Then, if we're lucky, we'll get some publicity shots of actors or locations around July or August.

Can't believe it's really happening!

Exit question: Will we be able to stand it if they *really* mispronounce a name or term? Like what if they always refer to "SAY-DAR" for the Power or something? :p Or (nightmare zone), call her EGG-WEEN?

The Audio book had the Prologue with Dragonmount that ended with the bit of the Prophecies about the Dragon being reborn, and then Chapter 1 introduced us to Rand. I had no idea that there was supposed to be a mystery to Rand being the Dragon. I just thought it was a given that Rand was the Dragon.

I don't think it was supposed to be a mystery to the readers. I was just slow on the uptake.

It's hard to know how much it was supposed to be a mystery - We learn very early on that Rand was born outside of the Two Rivers, but offhand, I can't recall how early we are introduced to the prophecies of the Dragon
We also see Perrin getting to talk to wolves, and Mat getting a magic dagger so it makes sense that Rand would get something as well.
But, it's been almost 30 years since I first read book 1 and I can't remember if I thought it obvious at the time

I don't remember ever not thinking Rand was the main character. I sort of remember there being a tiny bit of ambiguity in the opening chapters, but even then it was more of "Is Rand *not* the main guy?" rather than "Who is the main guy?"

I think there's perhaps a bit of space between it being a legit, actual, headscratcher and there actually being a bit of dramatic tension. Yes, you, the savvy reader, know that OBVIOUSLY Rand is this Dragon fellow. But well, it's still a bit exciting to "discover" it as the books progress, is it not?
