From what I gather, the only shard they had was Odium, which means their surgebinding must have come from him. Spren are a thing unique to Roshar, so I think what happened was that Odium was supplying some form of investiture to the people, which was very destructive. Since the only investiture familiar to the dawnsingers is surgebinding, that's what they called it. Either way, the spren didn't get invested until the shards started showing up.

That makes sense, but now I am wondering what it was he was allowing them to do, and why they worried that the abilities they got from bonding spren were similar enough they could be equally dangerous

I feel like something happened near the end of Honor's life that corrupted everything. We know from the Epigraphs and Dalinar's conversations with the Stormfather that the KR left Urithiru prior to the Recreance due to the Spren that powered the city falling asleep. Stormfather says she (?) slumbers. And then at some point the Midnight Mother takes her place. It's super weird, and something went wrong there. I expect we'll find out eventually.

I certainly doubt that knowledge alone would lead to such a concerted and conscious abandonment of oaths and bond.

Btw, i kind of theorize that the people of Roshar come from Trenody.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Though, really, Brandon, it's cool if you use a toxic trope and then have your character address its toxicity, but it would be even better to stay away from the trope all together. Just sayin'.

I finished :D
I cannot say that I enjoyed this book as much as the last one. But then again, Words of Radiance is probably one of my most favourite books EVER, so it was a tall order to compete with ;)
I am still a little confused. I probably need to reread to make sense of the details here. I tried to read slowly, but I had a lot of stuff on my mind recently, so I probably missed a lot :( I also gets confused by all the different names for things... All the different names for the different Surges, and the different names for the Heralds and other old people that pops up.
Shallans multiple personality disorder is scary. I know it is her coping mechanism, but her temptation to be other persons can be a danger. I do like that she decided to go with Adolin :pleased-1:
I also feel that Jasnahs return was underplayed but then again, it is very much in her character :pleased-1: And I loved her in the battle, just casually killing Fused Ones without really looking :joy
I was disappointed that she was chosen to be ruler of Alethkar though. I actually hoped it would be Renarin :(
Cliche end with Amaram though. Of COURSE he is chosen to take over for Sadeas. And of COURSE he joins with the enemy :rolleyes I liked him a lot better as an unlikable person on the "right" side...
Also, LOVE the revelation that the humans are actually the invaders :D It just throws so much more ambiguity into the whole story :pleased-1:

I didn't see it that way. It was interesting, but I didn't see it as as changing who were the good guys and who were the bad guys in any way.

Really stunning book so much answered and yet still so many other questions raised.

Hoid was great as usual but we need more of his involvement and story!

Loved how it all got twisted around with the Parshmen/Listeners now working for the voidbringers god to take back their world and how Venli bonded a spren and a voidspren.

Kaladin has been my favorite character from the beginning, and all the back and forth and being on the verge of the Fourth Ideal was driving me crazy! I thought it was coming this book from fairly early on and then when it didn't... GAH!

Nah. There's just one particular character from Warbreaker present in the book. The last time I read Warbreaker was over two years ago, and it was pretty clear to me who the character was. Though Winterdawn read Warbreaker more recently and figured it out a lot faster.

I enjoyed warbreaker so read it again if you dont remember it. Its not going to have any major revelations for Stormlight but it will jog your memory about characters mentioned or present.

Honestly, I only understood who that character was because someone mentioned that that person was in the book. When I was looking for the person, I found out pretty quickly...

I finished. I have many thoughts, but I'm trying to organize them.

Jasnah is a badass and is totally my favorite character. Also, Queen Jasnah!

I agree that Jasnah is awesome, but I was sad that we didn't really get to see much of her in this book. And her return was not given a lot of attention :(

Kalarn - I think there was MUCH more of Hoid in this book. I felt his part was huge and very developing of his character

Jeffan - so much agreed!!!!! she is fabulous

Aduvias - I didn't know who it was for quite some time. I knew something was up with how things about her were written, but I didn't know who til I read something outside that revealed it. and I agree that
the humans being the invaders was an amazing twist.

Stephen - I disagree about Odium
the text says Odium came to Roshar after the two shards already present - Honor and Cultivation - and I inferred he came when the humans came. And since Odium was on Sel prior to being trapped in Greater Roshar now - and i don't know if it was immediately prior to, I was thinking the humans came from Sel (Elantris)
