Why is tower chat still IRC?

I would absolutely LOVE if chat was on Discord. I use it constantly already. It has both text and voice chat, can be used on the computer and phone (though I've never used the mobile app, and it isn't tied to the phone so using it on the computer doesn't affect your phone data at all. It's incredibly easy to use too. Yes, I definitely put my vote for Discord if it ever comes up seriously to change the chat platform.

Howdy! Just FYI. We will be adding the discussion of this to the upcoming exec meeting.

Thoughts:

IRC: I'm not saying we should completely get rid of it. I think there will be some people who will refuse to move on to something new. But IRC only does text, it's unstable and is prone to netsplits, doesn't support pictures or animated gifts, doesn't support voice, and is almost 30 years old now - it's a bit antiquated. I know there are mobile programs, but I haven't found them to be as good as Telegram or Slack.

Telegram - I liked how easy it is to integrate into the current page, I like how you can respond and quote what people say, and that you can send animated gifts and do some voice.

Slack - I've used it a bit for ingress. I don't really like the interface, but I like it more than IRC

Discord - I'm not familiar with it.

Whatsapp - I agree with being hesitant on this one. It does require phone numbers, you can't link to a whatsapp channel like you can with telegram, you can't quote, or put it animated gifs in the same way.

Yeah, I'm in favor of old schooling it. Also if someone wants to start a new fangled chat group nothing is stopping you from making one and inviting people to it, people already do similar things within their Ajahs and on Facebook. Our chat format doesn't have to officially change for you to have a mobile chat.

I like the IRC because we can easily make new channels, have bots, host spontaneous trivia/NaNowrimo nights, and new people can pop in and discover us :)

*disclaimer* my personal opinion ;)

None of these things are actually impossible with a Discord server. :P Slack is a little more complicated/private, but it could be done.

Also...impromptu chat groups do not have the same attraction factor as the main "Chat" link does. I don't want to create an unintentional clique, and that kind of thing would inevitably lead to just that- or, the opposite problem, where a lot of people migrate to an unofficial platform because it's fun/easy, and then eventually the Tower decides to switch to that platform and puts a kabash on the private server so then everyone has to switch. Giant pain in the ass.

I'm glad it's being discussed at exec meeting. ^_^

I would log into irc more, but the people I joined the tower to hang out with don't go into the main chat room, and being a lowly old homeless bum I can't go to any of the other rooms. There's already plenty of division.

I'm a 20 year veteran of irc, never used any of the other programs mentioned, but would probably use whatever was required to get in and chat, so long as I'm not giving my phone number out, or anything similar.

Everything's worth discussing :) I'd be OK with having both of them linked personally.

My personal preference would just be something more mobile friendly. I can't be chained to my laptop all day.

You mean vintage!
IRC <3 :cry :tug

If a bunch of people wanted to use a program that's accessible from laptops and cells I'd probably use that, too, but IRC is something I use on the regular for several chatrooms that are totally WoT-unrelated, so I'm down either way.

I have a strong emotional attachment to IRC, but I agree that something more mobile friendly might make chat more active. :\

I have not yet found one I like enough to continue using, to be honest. (Also, keep in mind I used to be an IRC fiend, so I totally get the attachment on a very personal level. For me, it's more about what will actually work for the site to generate more interaction and community building. IRC is very, very quiet these days. I can go in there for hours and not hear a *peep*.)

There will be an open Green Chat in Discord in the first week of February if anyone would like to try it out. :) We'll post details in General once we decide on a specific date, and anyone who wants to hang out on the server for indefinite amounts of time afterward is welcome to do so.

Maybe Ninya it depends on the times you are online?
I am not long in this forum and so of cause haven't visited the chat as often as you have, but I used it several times. It only happend to me once, that I talked to nobody.
I have learnt serval things about TV.net cause there is an active irc-chat. :look:

Please don't move chat to some kind of modern chat service. :indifferent: In my opinion, the brilliance of IRC is that you can just log out and then it's not there. If I have to receive notifications from dozens of Tower members chatting every day, I'm going to go mad.

Oh gosh, very much this. I'd welcome the switch to a more mobile-friendly platform, but not if it's going to give me push notifications constantly.
