“Will we reach the Eye today, Moiraine Sedai?” Egwene asked.

The Aes Sedai gave Loial a sidelong look. “I hope that we will. When I found it before, it was just the other side of the mountains, at the foot of the high passes.”

“He says it moves,” Mat said, nodding at Loial. “What if it isn’t where you expect?”

“Then we will continue to hunt until we do find it. The Green Man senses need, and there can be no need greater than ours. Our need is the hope of the world.”

In the first book, although I can't quite find the exact passage, a big deal is made that finding the Green Man / Eye of the World is something that can only be done once (per person). Moiraine has already found the Green Man once, presumably some time between the end of New Spring and the start of Eye of the World. She also doesn't seem the least bit worried that she won't be able to find him again, so I presume that Someshta probably instructed her to come back to him with the Dragon Reborn.

I further assume this would have come up in one of the unwritten prequel books. I've asked this before in a couple other forums and mostly the answer I've gotten is: "We just don't have enough information." Maybe I'm looking more for your best speculation on the topic, (unless you can pick out some book references others have not regarding the subject, but I really don't think there are any.)

So, yeah... questions:

1. Why did Moiraine meet the Green Man previously, and how exactly did it take place?

2. How likely is it Moiraine's first trip to the Green Man was not related to the Dragon Reborn? Would she have any other reason to go to the blight between New Spring and Eye of the World?

3. When do you think this alleged meeting happened? Years prior, or immediately before she sets out for Emond's Field? Is that how she knew to go there? And if so, how would Someshta know where Rand was?

Speculate away!

I have no answer, or good speculation at the moment, but another question to add...

Where did she get the information about the green man and the eye of the world from?
There is a hell lot of knowledge... I can't belive they (Siuan and her?) figured it out by accident...

Does somebody know?

Moiraine travelled a lot in the Borderlands, that is known from New Spring. I suspect that that was when she met the Green Man. And no, I don't think there is any chance that it was not related to the Dragon Reborn. EVERYTHING Moiraine did was related to the Dragon Reborn :p

That's my feeling as well.

I was thinking all day about this at work, and now I'm not convinced the Green Man told her to bring the Dragon Reborn back to the Eye. It's been a couple years since my last re-read, but I believe they weren't heading for the Eye at all. Moiraine was trying to take Rand to the tower, and they switched game plans mid-book when she found the dark one was trying to blind the eye of the world, I think from the dreams the boys were having.

Or maybe he told her to bring Rand back there, but not necessarily right away. She seems so sure that her need is great enough to be able to go again, when no one else has been allowed.

I really wish I had made it to a RJ QA so I could have asked these questions. Although I'm sure the answers would have been RAFO.

Maybe that info was written down and we can pester Harriet about it?

It's a question that's always intrigued me. We're never told what kind of Need lets people find the Green Man. We're never told why the Green Man is in the Blight. We're never told why anyone would be looking for the Green Man in the first place. Why is the Green Man injured? Who did it? When? Why did he die when obviously he was powerful enough to hold back the Blight from his garden for 3,000 years?!

And then there's the Moiraine questions! Why did she go looking for him? He doesn't have much memory, so why would she go to him in regards to the DR, or to anything else? How does anyone know about him in the first place? If he's well known, why aren't Aes Sedai trying to find him all the time?
Inquiring minds must know.

My guess is that he was somehow tied to the Power via the Eye, and when Rand used it up he lost his extra abilities. We don't really know much about the rest of his race, but they didn't manage to hang around for thousands of years.

I wonder - did Someshta know the song that the Tinkers were looking for? Did any of them ever track him down, but didn't make it back out of the Blight afterwards? There's potential for a tragic short story there.

I had the impression that it was Rand's need to escape the wurms and save Egwene which let them into the Green Man's realm. Could be wrong, I don't have the book to hand to check what it is that gave me that idea.
