She discards it after burning a hole in the Waygate outside Fal Dara. Using it as a focal point for her weaves burned it and made it useless as anything.

The Archer, the Axeman and the Swordsman vs. The Farmboy, the Blacksmith and the Trickster.
Wil, can you elaborate on this? What are you referring to? :scratch

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: EoTW, Chapter 7 - Chapter 13

In the prologue to The Great Hunt, Bors is show images of the boys, and the later are the names he gives them. Right now, the boys have these weapons and use them. Just thinking how differently darkfriends and TDO itself considers the boys and what they really are. This schism might be explain why things fell apart for The Dark One's forces. *shrugs* I was just going over ideas in my head about my reread so far when I wrote those

And lastly... Moiraine telling the story of Manetheren. So. Fricking. Awesome. Actually one of the scenes I would *love* to see as live action.

Absolutely. It's one of my favorite parts of the entire series.

Also, I hate reading dreams so I probably won't catch any foreshadowing, etc in them. :look:

Thank you! I had it in my head something like this happened somewhere, but I'd convinced myself that I was havering

There is one thing I can think of that would be better than live action, if I were to be in charge of a WoT live action series, if I had the resources I would get Genndy Tartakovsky to animate it and let him go full samurai jack style on it.

anyways time for chapter by chapter comments!

Chapter 7

We first learn that Moraine is an Aes Sedai here, I love the entire scene of Rand with Thom and Brann in the Winespring, and Thom shows his cunning by leading the Emmon's Fielders into the idea. We learn that Trollocs have tribes, information that does not really matter later in the series if I recall properly, do you think that Trollocs spent 3000 years in the blight fighting each other like the Aiel did?

Chapter 8

I like the logic that Lan and Moraine show here, instead of just saying that "The dark one is after rand" they follow it up with good questions about how the attack happened.

Chapter 9

Oh the story of the Mountain Home, this is probably my favorite part of book 1, and we first meet "Bale'zamon" who..I pegged as The guy from the Prologue from the first moment he showed up. Ishamael is by far my favorite forsaken and possibly one of my favorite antagonists in fiction. He is incredibly effective at what he set out to do while he was sealed

Chapter 10

I absolutely love that we get a glimpse of servants of the dark one here, I honestly wish there were more of them as opposed to the few we get. I wanted to see more of the creatures of the blight in the last battle.

Chapter 11

The first moment of Aes Sedai being "Evil Witches" even without Ishamael tugging on strings to cause chaos and splintering among the forces of the light for three thousand years I can see why Aes Sedai have the reputation they do sometimes, things like this what is done in the early parts of Book 2. The White Tower does have a really bad habit of "the ends justifies the means" especially early on like this.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: EoTW, Chapter 7 - Chapter 13

Little things I've noticed along the way:

Chapter 10 - Lan mentions it would've been better if wolves had howled than an owl hooting, and Perrin is the one who exlaims "Wolves?!" and gets a stare from Lan ;)

Chapter 11 - When Rand worries about Bela falling behind, "... he silently shouted at Bela to run like the wind, silently tried to will strength into her. Run! His skin prickeld, and his bones felt as if they were freezing, ready to split open." I don't remember picking this up on my first read through (which, fair enough was many years ago) as obviously then I didn't know anything about channelling. But on re-reads and reflection, I find it fascinating that really, Rand starts channelling this early on in the books :) I don't know why I find that fascinating, I just do

Bear with me here while I just throw something out there which has stuck in my head a bit, based on reading about Master Hightower. In some ways it ties back to what people were saying earlier about the Congars/Coplins. While RJ fleshes out his main characters (and those who become more than just side characters) well, with faults to balance the "Hero" status, sometimes I feel characters like Hightower are very one-dimensional. He's a Taren Ferry man, so he's sly/tricksy etc. He is not just greedy, and treacherous (given the chance), he's small, he's ugly, he's mean, he's grumpy... It's like they have to be all bad or all good. Like any nice Innkeeper they encounter, or kind farmer. They're one thing or the other. Now, I appreciate that it's not like these characters are necessarily in the book long enough to give a balanced view, but still... Yeah, I did say you had to bear with me

I don't remember where, but Rand and Mat met an innkeeper that were thin, and Rand was thinking something like this "I don't trust that man". And he was right, he wasn't a nice man (a darkfriend or wanted to rob them I think).

Rand get sick after channeling a few times, because he didn't do it right. I think it's when Rand and Mat is running alone at the road?

Rand gets sick when they arrive in Baerlon after this, and on the ship later, and on the road with Mat :look: But I think he stops having these issues after the encounter in The Eye of the World :look:

Yeah, he has the sickness or the weird elation where he feels like he can do crazy things for a while. In Baerlon, he laughs at the Whitecloaks... then on the ship, he does acrobatics. I think by the ship, Moiraine has explained how touching the Source can affect you to Nynaeve, so you start to notice the pattern. It's fun to pick these things up on a re-read though :)

I actually completely missed it until that was pointed out to me, I thought the stuff later on that rand does was all his Tav'eren nature.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: EoTW, Chapter 7 - Chapter 13

I keep coming back to how did Moiraine know to be there, and I asked again in Chapter 7, because TDO knew: the Trollocs burned Mat's dad's house, and the forge, and Perrin's parents' house, and attacked Tam's farm. They were after them specifically. Why? How'd they (Moiraine and TDO) know?

Chapter 8
We see that Lan doesn't trust Thom.

It amused me to see phrases from curses used in a non-curse way: mother's milk, and ashes & blood.

We saw earlier that a lot of things in the Two Rivers are that way because they've always been. On Winternight, that was a good thing, because the custom of visiting neighbors helped save Mat and Perrin (and their families).

Chapter 9 (not quite done yet)

In the dream, Rand sees both Shayol Ghul and Dragonmount (I need to go back and check: How does he feel toward Dragonmount?).

He also sees Tar Valon, and sees it as a place of safety, serenity, and sanctuary.

Well, for the whole first book, Tar Valon IS a place or safety for Rand :look: That is kind of the goal for the whole first book to get there :look:

A bit of forshadowing in chapter 12 - Egwene and the Amyrlin Seat, which I think we see more of when we meet Min, and we see thom's dislike of gentling, which in hindsight is for obvious reasons, but at the time, I don't think we knew enough to realise

Does he? Remember he opens the door onto a Fade. I wonder if that was foreshadowing the somewhat tumultuous relationship Rand has with the White Tower (he doesn't go there til really late in the series, iirc). It only takes til the end of book 1 for him to be starting to mistrust Aes Sedai.

Re: 2015 Re-Readalong: EoTW, Chapter 7 - Chapter 13

The dream with Tar Valon was strange. He was happy to be there and acknowledge the White Tower as his main goal, but when he tried to just wander the streets of the city and take a look around everyone got angry with him and there was some sentence about how he had let them down.
