I thought stromfather is odium. I got a feeling he is not good one, dunno why...

Well that's what I can't decide. When Kaladin is tied up in the storm and he sees the face, I got the sense that the storm father wasn't good, as well. But then in that sequence when he's riding the storm, the voice talks to him and tells him Odium is coming the way the face in the storm is portrayed is a lot kindlier (I can't remember exactly what gave me this impression, though -- maybe I'll look it up later).

So, somehow I got the impression that storm father = good guy, and is male. But if that's the case I can't tie all the pieces together.

I dunno, maybe the storm father is Odium and Cultivation lives in Shinovar? :cheeseeni: WE NEED BOOK #2 ALREADY!

I also thought the face in the storm was a kindly one, and intuitively thought it would have to be Stormfather. But Stormfather being Odium would make sense - the storms aren't good in themselves, since they make life so difficult for the people, animals and plants. And like Arec said the gemhearts seem to be a source of competition, envy and even hate. But yeah, MORE BOOKS, Sanderson!

I finally got my book back this past week and I'm kinding doing my own random reading intervals since I'm so far behind everyone else. :P I finished Part 1 (up through chapter 11) so far and here are my thoughts...

- I did not know about this Hoid character someone mentioned early in this thread. Great, now I have to re-read every Sanderson book own. I remember not liking Wit as a character on my first read-through, but now he just became much more interesting.

- It's hard to keep the prologue and chapter 1 in mind, as the rest of the chapters have been from Kaladin or Shallan's perspectives. The dribbles we're getting about the history between 'now' and 'then' are driving me crazy. I want to know what all of these strange names and titles mean!

- Arecias mentioned that Syl has been with Kaladin since that beginning and I caught that this time, but hadn't made the connection before. How come we never see any other spren like her, that can talk and reason and remember? Is she super special or do we just not have an opportunity to see others?

- Where did the safehand thing come from? In a minor character I would just write it off as a religious quirk and be satisfied, but it's mentioned too often for me to ignore.

- Someone mentioned the capitalization of Shallan's Memory thing...I assumed it was to differentiate between something she remembered like an ordinary person of and something she'd taken an internal perfect snapshot of so she could draw it later.

- My brain keeps trying to find ways to connect Kaladin and Shallan's stories and is very irritated when it can't manage it.

- I agree with Taika Sedai about Shallan's character, she's awfully sassy for someone who professes to be so shy and awkward around strangers. She speaks her mind a lot more easily than I would be able to in her situation.

- Other people here keep discussing Shallan's brother...I hadn't given him any thought at all. :O Guess I totally missed that one.

- I wonder if the hurricane shape of the land has something to do with these craaaaazy storms they have all the time.

And now I'm only 4 1/2 pages behind the conversation. :giggle Carry on around me, carry on...

Megana, glad you got your book! I don't have time to respond this moment but I will :)

I was wondering if we could be able to decipher the glyphs?

I noticed Kaladin wanted to lie to Rock, but he wouldn't because Syl was listening.

My thoughs :D

- I did not know about this Hoid character someone mentioned early in this thread. Great, now I have to re-read every Sanderson book own. I remember not liking Wit as a character on my first read-through, but now he just became much more interesting.

Yeah :D I knew Hoid but have found him only from one book. I haven't searched deliberately him though...

- It's hard to keep the prologue and chapter 1 in mind, as the rest of the chapters have been from Kaladin or Shallan's perspectives. The dribbles we're getting about the history between 'now' and 'then' are driving me crazy. I want to know what all of these strange names and titles mean!

I know the feeling :D I had to re-read prologue and ch1 few times in between the chapters because after reading more I started to understand them better (with tons of questions).

- Arecias mentioned that Syl has been with Kaladin since that beginning and I caught that this time, but hadn't made the connection before. How come we never see any other spren like her, that can talk and reason and remember? Is she super special or do we just not have an opportunity to see others?

I believe Dalinar will start to see them, and of course Shallan sees spren and talks with him/them (is it one or many?), but different way than Kaladin. Maybe her spren starts to talk more freely too?

- Where did the safehand thing come from? In a minor character I would just write it off as a religious quirk and be satisfied, but it's mentioned too often for me to ignore.

It has to be significant. There was a mention int he book that it is great talent to write, draw or generally do anything with only one hand, so maybe that idealism has just gone too far? Could ne just one of those "control women" things (like corset, small feet etc) or maybe soulcasting with bare hands is more effective??

- My brain keeps trying to find ways to connect Kaladin and Shallan's stories and is very irritated when it can't manage it.
Same :D But probably Kaladin killed Shallan's brother (shardbearer) also they very likely meet at that Shattered Plains :)

- I agree with Taika Sedai about Shallan's character, she's awfully sassy for someone who professes to be so shy and awkward around strangers. She speaks her mind a lot more easily than I would be able to in her situation.

This I find plausible. Shallan is constantly TOLD she is shy and etc even she is not. Those are the traits of a good woman. She mainly acts how she is suppose to but not always. And now when she is alone (not under superwising eyes) her true nature bursts out and to control it Shallan thinks (or tries to think) herself shy. I know many people who have been told (by parents, siblings, friends) they are fat or stupid (when they are not) so they tend to keep themselves such. Until maybe late adulthood they finally break the spell usually after some misery.

- I wonder if the hurricane shape of the land has something to do with these craaaaazy storms they have all the time.
Probably yes :D I didn't notice this until this thread :D

I believe at least Kaladin, Dalinar, Shallan will be Knights Radiant because of their abilities and visions, and they're ability to talk to spren. I think the combination of Shardbearer, spren and a Talent makes a Knight Radiant. I think they're will be ten great warriors in all. The number 10 keeps coming up to be coincidence. Ten Surgebinders (are they called in the prologue? ), ten highprinces, ten Essences, the city of Akirah has 10 "districts." Ive seen the number a few other times also.

In the maps of the cities at the end of Ch 32, Kholinar looks to be in the shape of a giant Chasmfiend, while Akirah looks like a safe hold.

Wait, where does Dalinar talk to spren? Unless you mean the nightwatcher? But I don't think that counts.

Elhokar, though, can see the same spren that Shallan and Jasnah see (the soulcasting ones).

I don't think Dalinar will become a KR, though I think Shallan and Kaladin probably will. I don't know about the shard thing, though. There's something about shards that repulses both Kaladin and Sil, so I don't think he will ever become a shardbearer.

Ok, changing my line of thinking a bit. Honor seems to be the common theme with the main characters. Of course there's Kaladin, Dalinar is learning honor and teaching it to his children, Jasnah does what she believes is right even when ridiculed by everyone, Szeth has honor because he hates what he has to do but does it for honor, Navani is honorable. Elkohar, Shallan I'm not too sure about, but I'll think they'll learn honor.

But how about this: There are 10 Essences, and there were ten Heralds, each Herald controls a different Essence. If we count the main characters who are honorable or are learning honor, we get 10; Kaladin, Shallan, Szeth, Jasnah, Dalinar, Adolin, Renarin, Elkohar, Navani, Rock. In Dalinar's first vision of the KR, there seemed to be many KR, the KRs can be anyone now that I think about it, maybe the making of Shardplate and blades are rediscovered, that would give an army of KR to fight the Voidbringers. So the main characters could be the Heralds returned, and they Cultivate Honor in Alethkar

I think Szeth will find the Honor Shard and become Honor. There's just too much about him being the "[strike]honorless[/strike] Truthless of Shinovar."

edit: sigh. Thanks Taika Sedai. Silly me.
