Do you start at new spring?

I know when i first read the series i didnt know new spring existed so read it after all the other books, this time im reading it first and enjoying the background info before the main story begins.

When did you read it originally and when do you read it if you do a full re-read?

I read it when it was published. So, that was just after Crossroads of Twilight. I generally suggest people read it just after The Fires of Heaven if it's their first time through, for reasons I can't discuss here. If you've already read them all and are going for a re-read, I'd say start with New Spring.

I just started my re-read, and I did start with New Spring. But, for people who haven't read the series before, I strongly recommend against starting with NS.

There's a lot of neat character regression in NS, which I think is better appreciated after getting to know the characters.

But that's just me.

When I started I was told wait till after Dragon Reborn then read New Spring. Which I honestly found to be helpful. I had a basic understanding of the world and Aes Sedai and found that that foreknowledge helped alot.

Question: Does a New Spring humanize Moriane more? Not to say she isn't human, but in the first book and part of the second she's an Aes Sedai, everyone is in Awe of her. She's larger than life. Something out of stories etc etc. So if you read a New Spring and then Book one, do you still feel the awe that Rand, Mat and Perrin feel at meeting an Aes Sedai?

I feel like NS humanizes Moiraine and Siuan a lot. They remind me of Egwene, Nynaeve, and Elayne as novices/Accepted.

Yeah honestly even though its a prequal I think its best to at least read the first couple of books before reading New Spring, I thought about that when I was going to give my roommate the first book to read and she said she prefers to read books in the order they came out regardless of their prequal status or not. Also, its best to keep some of the mystery surrounding why Moiraine is there until at least certain secrets are revealed, otherwise you go into the story knowing the roles certain people will play.

I have not yet read New Spring. If I had remembered about it before starting my re-read, I would have gotten a copy to start before diving into the series again. I will have to get a copy as soon as I finish this time.

I read New Spring first, then Eye of the World...way back when I was a teenager. New Spring takes away some of the mystery of Eye of the World, but honestly I always figured certain things would have been obvious even if I hadn't started with the prequel.

Still, EotW kind of got long/boring to me and once I finished it was several years before I picked up Great Hunt and really fell in love with the series. Maybe I was just too young at first, but I think also the "why are they being chased" question as plot motivation didn't really engage me since I had read New Spring and already knew the answer.

I first read it when it was published. I have to admit that I am currently on a reread and did not add it to the list of books to reread. I am not sure when I will pick it up and read it again. I like the back history it gives us, but I dont see it as something I would add to the reread.

I didn't read New Spring until after #12. If it is someones first time reading WoT I don't suggest reading NS until after about book 6. If you've already read WoT though then I don't think it makes a difference on the re-read.

same for me. It was great to read through, but its not a book I am going to jump back in and re read every time I go back through the series.

I'm on my third re read and I'm reading NS to start. I just picked up where

Moiraine threw all the Cairhinien invitations in the fire

and later in "The Great Hunt" Rand does the exact same thing!!

I have had it for a while and started to read it but only did like, a chapter. My question is for all of those people that HAVE read it???? When do all of you RECOMMEND reading it? prequel as it wa swritten? Or after the regular series is done? or does it even matter? Are there spoilers in it that might make the series less cool? or does in by contrast make the series better if you read it first?

please lemme know!

I'd probably say after book 3. It can be read as the first book, but there is a lot of information in there pertaining to the later books, so the experience a first time reader would get, would be different if they started with NS, than if they started with tEotW. Once you have read the first three, there isn't much in NS that would be a spoiler, so subsequent re-reads, it can be first.
