(There is seperate thread for the re-read of The Way of Kings in this same forum)

I'm excited, this series is planned to have 10 books, which means it will most likely be 15 in the end. Now that WoT is over and Sanderson is free to work on this series, it is a series I think WoT fans can use to partially feel the void in their hearts since AMoL is done.

The first book of the series is already out, "The Way of Kings." I've already grown attached to some of the characters already: Kaladin, who tries so hard to do the right thing, but has one tragedy after another. Shallan, the young girl who leaves home to help her family and becomes a young scholar. My favorite so far is Syl, I just love her.

There some parts that are reminiscent of Mistborn, like Kalidin is nicknamed Kal (Kelzer in Mistborn is nicknamed Kel). The magic system is original but has a few touches of similarities with Mistborn, but it's not the same at all.

The hierachy of the people seems totally original to me, and the world seems to be earth, but the scenery and vegetation aren't at all what you you would see in a fantasy epic.

Anyway for those like me who are heartbroken after reading the final page of AMoL, this may be a good series to start and wait 20 more years to finish!

Has anyone else read it? Thoughts? Does anyone like Syl as much as I do?

That will definitely fill the fantacy book void WOT left in me :) I read it as an ebook sometime ago...just eagerly waiting part 2 :) I'm planning to do a reread just beore it comes out :) My favorite is Shallan, and someways Dalinar as well. Syl is great also...

I think brandon sanderson will stick with his 10-book plan rather well, how ever while doing this he has managed to publish 7 new "stand-alone" books with a sequel...

reminiscents are there in purpose, because the worlds of mistborn, elantris and wok belongs to the same universe "Cosmere" (however you don't need that knowledge to enjoy each saga separetely)

I need to do a reread, it has been a while since I read it the first time and I really enjoyed it. It was nice how it set everyone in place, with their back history, to move forward with the next book.

Deiria I didn't know about "Cosmere", but it makes sense now. There were so many small similarities in the different series I thought Sanderson was lacking ideas a bit. (Sorry Brandon). I have to look into it.

Keelinnea, I also liked how the character storylines were set-up to where there was a sense of closure at the end of the book, but also we know there's a lot more to come! I can't wait for the second book.

I've read it too, and am eagerly waiting for the next one. The Way of Kings is imo best of Sanderson's books so far. I'm fascinated by the world and magic system, and favourite character is Kaladin, though I like Syl, Shallan (and her mentor Jasnah), and also Szeth-son-son-Vallano, the Truthless. There are lots of great characters! (Must re-read soon...)

Jasnah is probably my favorite, but then, I'm always drawn to the purposeful yet distant women (Moiraine, anyone?) in books.

I've only read this book once so far, so my memory of it is a little shaky, but yes, I loved it and the world and the people he set up, and can't wait for the rest.

I also noticed some of the similarities, and figured he was just playing around with themes. I only recently found out about the cosmere thing (I think it was a comment someone made on the twitter chat about whether the WoT world fits in to Sanderson's multiverse).

One thing I thought was cool was how both in Mistborn and the Stormlight world, magic is related to currency, though in very, very different ways.

It's hard to not feel bad for Szeth-son-son-Vallano, with all he's been through and his battle with his inner-demons.

I totally forgot about Jasnah:brown-blink:, I like Jasnah too! The comments on this thread make me remember that there are many good, well developed characters in the book. I see it's been a while since I read it too. I better re-read it before the next one comes out!

Definitely one of the better fantasy stories going around.

I'm looking forward to book 2 for sure.

How do fans of The Way of Kings feel about doing a re-read together before the next book comes out? Would anyone be interested? I'm still pretty new here, so I'm not sure how a re-read would be organized. We could read a certain number of chapters each week until the next book is released. I'd love to put a re-read together if people were interested, but like I said I'm still pretty new here so if its something that's not normally done in this community, or if it's a bad idea, there's no hard feelings . I'm just trying to do my part to help fill the WoT void I'm feeling :brown-blink:

Target is late 2013 or early 2014. Depends on how fast BS writes :) I think he has set some deadline on april. If it is reached, book will be out this year. If not, then early 2014.

Yay, thanks Deiria!

I had heard about the Hoid character appearing in every book by Sanderson, but had no idea about the Cosmere concept. Really interesting!

Do you have a reference for the 10 book thing? I haven't been able to see where it comes from and the only time I was able to find anything, it was 3 books (or maybe 5)

I don't see any reason why not. :D I'll join!
Do you know about the schedule of the second book? I rarely follow the homepages or social media of the authors, so I've no idea how far along the book is...

There has been some threads about re-reading together, like this one Myralin posted:
http://www.tarvalon.net/showthread.php?2702-Summer-WoT-Reread-Care-to-join-me

Ok thanks Taika Sedai, I'll try to get the details put together this weekend! (I'm moving today :grumble ) Thanks for the link, that will help out!

I would love to do something like this. I was planning on doing a reread anyway. If it lines up with your timing, then I can do it then. If not, I'll just have to re-re-read it with you guys!

PS where you moving to? :brown-blink: Closer to Seattle, maybe :pleased-1:

Toral Gaidin heres a quote from Sanderson in an interview with Barnes & Noble:
Sanderson Here!
.. . ..

In a recent (May 2009) interview you stated the following:

Q: What do you have planned after you finish Wheel of Time?

A: My next series will be The Way of Kings, which is the start of a big epic for me. I've plotted it as ten books. Fantasy writers, we get into this business because we love the big epics. We grow up reading Brooks and Jordan, and we get to the point where we say, "I want to do this myself."

Here's the link to the interview: http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com...estions-For-Brandon-Sanderson-Here/m-p/362842
