I saw there is a thread for "Favourite" character, but what about the ones you can't stand? They don't need to be from the main cast, but are there any who just make you grind your teeth/tug your braid every time they appear? Obviously there are characters we are supposed to dislike, but I'm meaning "the good guys" for want of a better term ;)

My most disliked "main character" is Faile. I just about tolerate her when she is held captive by the Shaido, but anytime it's about her interaction with Perrin I want to reach into the pages and shake her. I can maybe understand why she acts the way she does (like a spoiled child :tug) but that doesn't make her any more likeable.

The flip side of that coin is that I don't really like Berelain either :rofl

Oh there are several I dislike. Faile is number 2 of my top 3 character I would like to balefire. #3 is Perrin (and I totally blame his epic lameness on Faile)

and the winner is.... Moiraine. I know, I am in the vast minority here, but I have always hated Moiraine. They could have killed her at the end of the first book and I would have been very okay with that.

Nynaeve got on my nerves SO BAD I COULD HAVE STRANGLED HER WITH HER OWN BRAID! Whew. :tug

That's the only character that stands out right now, but I'm in the midst of my re-read so I may find others. :)

Faile, Egwene, Elaida, Cadsuane, Tuon. They make me :desk all the time and want to have them spanked by Nynaeve.

As for most people here, I don't really liked Faile, but that changed after she was taken by Shaido. Now I don't really dislike any character :/

Okay, so I know it has clearly been stated, but I have to add that I also disliked most of all Faile. I did not appreciate her capture as all that did was involve her more in the story. She is such a rude arrogant and dislikable character. I am glad that I am not alone in feeling this way. With so many disliking her, I guess she was supposed to be disliked but this doesn't justify what an annoying, ugly wench she was. I liked Perrin a lot when I first started the series, but her involvement weighed that down. I am a Rand man to the core, which is not typical for me. Most books there is another character besides the main one that is my favorite, but in WoT I am the dragon's left hand

I can't stand Padan Fain. I just don't understand what his role in the series is. He finds Rand in the Two Rivers but to me his storyline should be over after that.

Can I add Gawyn? I liked him in the original bits, like where he and Elayne meet Rand after he falls into the Palace in Caemlyn. He's even tolerable originally in Tar Valon. But as time goes on, the whole thing with him and the "Younglings" just hacked me off. It's like, "OK, dude, so you didn't like that Siuan manipulated people. But seriously, get that chip off your shoulder. Equally, you trust completely unsubstantiated rumours about Rand killing your mother, then when the woman you love tells you that you're wrong, you're just like 'whatever'?" The guy was born with a grudge shoved in his mouth instead of a silver spoon, it seems!

Egwene, portraying herself as good and righteous yet acting very much like Elaida, also the fact that everything she did just happened to be the right thing to do. I disliked Mat too, I got bored of the 'I'm gambling, and women sit on my knee, I am so funny!' thing.

I did like Mat the majority of the time, but I didn't really like him in the Sanderson books.

Gawyn is the Little Lion Man, I liked him in EoTW, but I couldn't stand him after that either.

Even though some of the characters were really annoying I still loved to read about them! (with the exception of triangle-drama-time Perrin & Faile)

I found most of the main character women slightly annoying at times, everyone in their unique way. Faile was one of the worst, but also Elayne, Egwene, Aviendha, Nynaeve (only a little though). Min kind of left me cold. Basically I think the reason is that they were all clinging to their ways, and were not open to see any other person's point of views. Except Egwene, maybe, but aside her time as a "novice" in the tower she was just ... a besserwisser. :p I found only the minor women characters (and RJ-written Tuon) likeable. I'll have to say about Nynaeve though, that her growing up story is one of the nicest in the books. She starts up awesome and competent, then meets the Big World and things she can't really handle, then has some regression (the clothes concerns, etc.) because of that, BUT she grows up to be awesome and competent again in the later books!

From the bad guys my least favourite was always Lanfear. I know many people find her awesome (if not likeable) but I never "got" her.

For the main male characters I disliked Gawyn the most, then Perrin, then the pre-madness
and post-madness
Rand :-)p I kind of liked him only mad, as weird as it is )

Oh, and Ealandrelle, I seem to agree with almost anything you say in the book forums!

Thank you Taika Sedai! Please feel free to call me Eala - easier to type ;) It's nice to know that my sometimes odd viewpoints are not only understood, but shared too :rofl

ME TOO. I had to fight the urge everytime the storyline was following her not to just skip it because she just irritated the crap out of me.:trout I would be okay if she never followed them from the first book....
