Hello everyone,

My interest in Wheel of Time, like for many, has been recently reignited by the new tv show. However, it has been ebbing and flowing for over a decade (I am now 37), having read the first and then listened to the audiobooks while doing some menial labor in my early twenties - and till this day the voices of those two narrators are my happy place.

I feel deeply in love with the books (my favorite characters are Moiraine and Nynaeve), I played the video game, I scoured the internet for roleplay groups and chatrooms (including even second life), and spent hours trying to decide which Ajah I would fit into (it was mainly between Blue & Grey). When the announcement came regarding the TV show I honestly had low expectations - fantasy tv shows have rarely been done well and I was concerned it would tarnish my previous experience with the literature. Luckily that was not the case for me; I love the direction the show is taking and while I do not approve of all the changes the spirit of WoT is there and it was more than I was expecting. I am also low key hopeful that since Amazon owns it, and they cancelled their LOTR mmo game - it might mean that one day we will get a WoT mmorpg and I can finally live out my fantasy of being an Aes Sedai!

As for my other hobbies and interests, I work in the sustainability/environmental industry, I love creating fantasy digital art (my avatar is one I created), I enjoy video games as mentioned, and live on 3 acres in the Australian countryside where we have 4 alpacas, 3 chickens, 2 cats, 1 dog and a lovely vegetable and medicinal garden.

I'm looking forward to meeting other's that love WoT as much as I do and participating in the community.

Welcome!

My wife, @Roheryn ni Galghandhrei t'al'Djinn, is correct in saying I’ll talk your ear off. We started our small farm and homestead a bit over two years ago, at the end of 2019.
We have our own menagerie- 8 chickens, a rooster, three horses, three goats (one of whom we shear for wool), six cats, and two dogs. I am getting bees soon, and we are working towards establishing an orchard so that in a few years we can have a cidery and meadery. I also am working on my MBA with a concentration in sustainability and would love to get to work as a consultant trying to help companies do better.

Right now I have quite a few brewing projects bubbling away.

What are your favorite homestead type skills? What are you most excited about?

Eyyyyy another Aussie. Welcome to the site. If you decide to take the Ajah route here I suggest you throw out any pre-made ideas you had about which Ajah you'll find home in, trust me :look:lol

Thank you all for the warm welcome!

Welcome to Tar Valon, Veluene!! What other books do you enjoy a lot? I personally like Brandon Sanderson.

I haven't read anything else by Brandon, will have to look into it. Otherwise I enjoyed the star wars expanded universe books (especially the Thrawn Trilogy), A song of Ice & Fire, ACOTOR etc. I also love books on mythology and folklore and have quite the collection.

Welcome!

That is brilliant! Great to hear you are working on your MBA, we definitely need more qualified & passionate people in the field. I finished my Masters in Sustainability around 5 years ago and now assisting local government in emission reductions and adapting/mitigating to climate change. I also love hearing from others who have made that change in lifestyle and acquiring goats is the next step in our plan so I will definitely have some questions about that further down the line.

I am passionate about local food and growing your own, not only does it reduce emissions in transport but it also promotes healthy eating - and I am trying to assist a few local community gardens get off the ground and help those that do not have the luxury of a garden at home. I have a thermomix and make my own yoghurts, cheese (milk currently sourced from a neighbours goat farm), canned preserves from our yearly glut, and lately I have taken great joy in growing my own herbs for teas. We also have a little orchard, but it is more with permaculture principles in mind rather than the traditional route of straight lined, mono-culture orchards. We have pears, mulberries, three types of apples, cherry, chestnut, apricot and fig. All scattered around with other shrubs and trees so it is more of a food forest, but the trees were only planted a few years ago so still very small. We found our home 3 years, having moved from the city, so like you we are still setting things up and learning a lot every day.

My goal is to create an agroforestry orchard garden, and a massive Walipini/geothermal greenhouse that allows me to localize citrus production even though we are in zone six. I also want to raise Tilapia in a water-tank hooked up to rain catchment on the greenhouse roof that will serve as the greenhouse's thermal mass. Right now we have two small (just planted this year) apple trees, one espaliered apple tree with four varieties grafted to it, and one mature apple tree. We also planted a fig tree, two pear trees, and a plum tree this year that have survived the cicada kill and the deer to make it to winter. I planted around ten trees this year, and only four are still alive. I plan to double down next year and get at least two dozen trees into the ground, as well as at least a dozen blueberry bushes and two dozen raspberry bushes. I planted canes last year, but they did not do very well.

I just got majorly into canning this year, so we don't yet have a huge haul, but I fully expect that to grow as I get more berry bushes established for jams and jellies, and triple or quadruple my tomato production next year. Right now I can't pressure can, so that highly restricts what I am able to do, but hopefully we will have our outdoor kitchen set up by next season.

What is a Thermomix?

I have never seen a Walipini greenhouse here, I wonder if Australian climate is suited to it? However, you have set me on a google-research escapade so thank you haha. Also, a thermomix is a glorious little german machine that cooks, slow cooks, sous vides, mills rice, nuts, grains into flour, grinds coffee, kneads dough... the list goes on! I like it because you can set it for precise temperatures which is brilliant for certain preserves or recipes so its kind of foolproof (good for people like me). :pleased-1:

Careful of this one, newbie :p Plotsy Blue is troublesome and close at hand.

But she has an adorable Matt Smith with a fez as part of her signature - that seems like fun kind of trouble! :yes

Please ignore my SortaBonded. He's odd and doesn't know what he's talking about.

And yes, Matt Smith is awesome. One of my favorite modern Doctors :D
