Figured we didn't have a thread yet and I have thoughts. ^_^

So, personally, I love it. To me, this is a clear demonstration of how they're tightening up the writing and cutting down the unnecessary bits. For example, there's lots of chatter about Moiraine and Lan arriving in the dead of night. Like, I think multiple pages. I love that it happens on screen and accomplishes so much. In the books, the whiplash from "I'm a sheepherder overawed by Moiraine's fancy clothes" to "AES SEDAI ARE NOT TO BE TRUSTED" is a little much for me on re-reads, so I like that they're just skipping straight to the meat of it: Aes Sedai are powerful and scary, and dealing with them puts you on really uncertain footing.

I also adore Rosamund here-- she takes control of that entire room while seemingly ignoring everyone but Mistress Al'vere, and what she says is so self-assured but yet polite and softened with a smile. She doesn't even allow the idea that she won't be able to stay at the Winespring, but she's not being a hardass about it. So I think this is spectacular.

I adore that Nynaeve is the first person to speak to Lan. Yeah, you confront the love of your life while gripping your dagger, he's gonna dig it. Also love the shift from thumping stick to dagger-- I think any implement like a cane/stick/etc is going to come across as too humorous on screen.

And Lan manDRAGoran, yes please, use Robert Jordan's pronunciation, I love it! I'm also really appreciating how clearly his opening shows what it is to be a Warder.

Rand's and Perrin's accents are so cute.

I also really like that Mistress al'Vere knew enough to recognize the ring on sight, as well as the proper address. The whole "Emond's Field is a backwater and everyone from there is incredibly ignorant about how the world really works" would really slow down the on-screen narrative, in my opinion. In order to stay consistent with it, The Five would need so many explanations (which they receive in the books) and the show just doesn't have that kind of time. We can show fish-out-of-water without having them be totally clueless.

In short, THIS SHOW IS GOING TO BE SO BLOODY GOOD. 41 Days!

I agree with all the things you said. It felt a bit awkward Lan standing there with his hood longer than it should have been. But I guess I can accept a bit of drama quenness from Lan.

The Big Things: I love it. I love how it sets up that beginning relationship between Moiraine and Lan and the Emond's Fielders, just by Moiraine's very presence.

I think it also showcases how unaccustomed to outsiders they are. Everyone we see in the beginning is a local, getting ready to celebrate Sunday, kicking back after a long day of working fields and setting up for those celebrations. Then when there are strangers present, the mood shifts so dramatically because they just aren't used to strangers. Like at all. I love that Moiraine has that kind of presence. Lan, too.

I also love that we get a reference to what must be Egwene's coming of age ceremony, which is probably what has set Rand off a little bit because they clearly haven't talked since then. They don't have a narrator to say that they've been planning on getting married for a long time, so they have to show it and I like this deeper dive into their budding relationship. It makes their feelings seem more real, and the later heartbreak will have more of a tragic impact.

The Little Things: I feel weird about Lan wearing spurs. We know Mandarb is a highly trained warhorse. Do we really think he requires spurs to ride him? Horses that are that trained usually just get kinda pissy about spurs because it's this sharp jab where a light nudge would suffice.

I love Rand and Perrin's accents. They're adorable and I am SO HAPPY that we finally get some speaking lines from them. I want to hear them all just as much as I want to see them. And as a personal note, I just want to put Rand in a protective bubble. Nobody hurts my son. Bless.

I still don't like the Aes Sedai rings. Those things are so bulky and they'd catch on everything. Good way to rip a finger off in a pinch.

Lastly, thank you diversity! I love that we see such a wide array of people in the Winespring. Notice Mat already talking up a plump girl. There was a woman smoking a pipe in one part, too, which isn't something you usually see. I'm literally in love with it.

Uhm high trained horses are exactly the ones you would wear spurs with, have you seen dressage in the Olympics? They're for fine tuning and a tool for skilled riders. I have seen less skilled people use them for various reasons and reactions that can come from horses when this happens. Modern dressage is basically the modern evolvement of what war horses were trained to do, check out the Spanish riding school in Vienna, they still train war horses as how they used to be and they all wear spurs. :) I was saying in discord last night that spurs are not mentioned in the books because why would you need them for long distance riding? Lan is the only one I could think of that would use them, because Mandarb is was trained.

I agree with all other points so far though in this thread and I'm super hyped! :D

I'm so in love with how we see Nynaeve portrayed in here. It really brought back my first time reading the series and her being my favorite character. I sincerely the rest of the show brings back that first time feeling regularly.

Personally I think Lan was awesome in this scene. He enters first, cases the room, then announces his AS matter-of-factly with obvious confidence that her name alone will carry weight. And Mat is chatting up the ladies. I'm very pleased by what I see here so far.

Slight spoiler for book one: [“spoiler”]I love that when Moiraine is standing by the fire she looks around the room, focusing on three boys of a certain age and two women that can channel.[“spoiler”]

I love the fact that Nynaeve is gripping her dagger. The way she holds herself like she's in charge of the safety of everyone in the room.

Egwene looks so good. That look she gives Rand though, I wonder what's up. And this ceremony thing, I wonder if that's the scenes with the river when Nynaeve pushes her in and she comes out covered in colors.

I love the fact that the first time we see Mat he is chatting up a girl  (I'm still sad about the recasting.)

I love Rand and Perrin's accents they sound like I imagined they would. And even though it was a short moment with the two of them, I love their friendship. I'm excited to see more of that.

When Lan entered and just stood their hood up, I don't know about anyone else but I got huge Aragorn vibes. And the way he pronounces his name is so good.

Moiraine's entrance gives me chills. I've watched the video so many times now and I still get shivers. She looks so good.

The fact that Lan and Moiraine don't give fake names and the villagers know she is an Aes Sedai is a huge change and I like it. It's going to be interesting to see what other changes they make. Hopefully not many big ones like this.

November 19th cannot get here fast enough.:)

Yeah, Rosamund Pike is perfect as Moiraine :D
I don't like the sort of stuffy "everyone stop!" moment, but this might get better with context. I hope this was just because it was the first time they met...

I love the accent, and the clear way that Rand is different from the others just in looks :D And how it is Nynaeve, as Wisdom who speaks up to the hooded stranger. And how Moiraine just plain ignores her. That sets the stage for her later resentment without needing to use words :D

That's me being half asleep on very little rest with two sick kids while also being way more accustomed to dealing with inexperienced riders. My brain went straight to putting a novice rider in spurs on a trained warhorse and went "that's a HORRIBLE idea!" :rofl

Yeah, it's going to raise Nynaeve's hackles to be ignored for certain. I noticed that as well!

I thought the same thing! I was wondering if the reference might be intentional, too, since Moiraine is kind of a mixture of a Gandalf/Aragorn character in Wheel of Time. If you knew nothing about Wheel of Time, you might think for a moment that Lan is going to be the mysterious guide, but then he introduces her and steps aside, subverting that expectation that the guide figure is going to be a man. If not intentional, it's a great accidental way of highlighting one of the things that makes Wheel of Time so unique.
