Made it to chapter 14 last night! I really like Tensoon's chapters and learning more about the Kandra. (Spelling may be wrong, I'm listening to the audiobook and don't remember...)

Sorry if I'm just being dense, but do we have a list somewhere of which chapters we're reading each week?

I just finished Part 4 and man I feel like this book is so long... There really hasn't been any progression in the story up to this point. Vin and Elend in Fadrex and Spook etc in Urteau.

Not having an actual schedule is making me procrastinate. :look: I'll figure out where I am and type up my notes at some point...

Yeah I totally dropped the ball on Hero of ages here. I had planned to make a schedule and then it didn’t happen and blah.

I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen for Alloy of Law if we want to continue on about it. Sorry everyone.

Yeah, this book is long, especially on reread when you know the ending :( Definitely one of Sandersons weakest books :(

No worries!! I didn't intend for that to sound directed at you. Sorry if it sounded that way. :hug

Chapters 1-12:

  • I love these pre-chapter bits! :) They're fun to read knowing how it ends.
  • Elend's powers being so much stronger makes for an interesting juxtaposition. We really get to see how skilled Vin is and how her skill doesn't just come from raw allomantic strength.
  • Inquisitors are granted different powers and the one fighting Vin and Elend at the beginning is able to run especially fast, apparently.
  • The fact that Ruin can alter information in feruchemical storage is an amazing twist. 'Cause the Keepers had, understandably, relied on their metalminds to keep their information accurate. Which seems entirely reasonable...
  • Sazed being the last living Feruchemist is really sad. :( :cry All that lost knowledge... and then he's decided he's probably not using his metalminds anymore. :cry
  • The Lord Ruler is a cool antagonist. He seems totally stereotypically evil at first, but by now we're learning his motivations and that he really was trying to save the world.
  • The writing of the Marsh chapters is so cool! I love how it seamlessly transitions between Marsh's inquisitors thoughts and his real thoughts. It's super creepy, but very well done. :)
  • TenSoon is so tricksy. :shifty
  • My heart breaks for Sazed: "We have all lost people dear to us. And yet, I seem to be the only one unable to get over my loss. I feel childish. Yes, Twindyl is dead. In all honesty, I did not have much time with her before she did pass. I have no reason to feel as I do." What a relatable sentiment. That quote really hit me hard.
  • And then Elend just calmly tells Vin that "He'll deal with it" because they know Sazed as this calm, composed person who has all the answers, without realizing the depth of what he's dealing with.
  • Cett's simple logic is brutal, willing to sacrifice his own people to get his city back.

Spoilers for the end of the book:

  • The Inquisitor tries to spike Elend using a steel spike, which would steal his physical allomantic abilities.
  • Vin's desire to find the Atium is because of Ruin's influence. Everyone else is right; Atium shouldn't be that valuable to them right now.
  • In the annotations, Sanderson mentions that Vin talks to Sazed about the power of the Well of Ascension being "power that you'll never be able to imagine" :giggle Sneaky...

The additional spikes the new Inquisitors have are from Feruchemy... That is what happened to all the other Keepers :( :cry

Ok I finished it finally! I liked the ending better this time, although the rest of the book I do think was quite slow.

Ohh, you're right. I forgot that that's where they'd come from. :cry

Chapters 13-:30
  • Vin's control of Human the kandra sounds a lot like Ruin's control of the Inquisitors. How she always has control of him, but isn't always aware of where he is until she concentrates on him. (and presumably, like Marsh and Ruin, if he were to do something crazy, she would notice)
  • Human can feel hatred from the mists. Interesting.
  • Elend using Pewter to strengthen his lungs so he can talk louder is clever! And he's so strong allomantically that he has to dampen his tin to not deafen himself. :brown-blink:
  • Sazed blames himself for Vin letting Elend die and releasing Ruin. :cry
  • Vin blames Ruin for the falling ash and the mists.
    She's half right. :look:
But, despite her claims otherwise, she thinks like a scholar and doubts her own assumptions on these points. She also notices the oddity with the numbers of people getting sick from the mists. She'd be a good scholar!
  • Poor Elend, having to make these really tough decisions. He's doubting whether he should have stopped noble families beating their children to see if they're allomancers. :(
  • Sazed notices that the Terris people aren't affected by the mists. Interesting. :shifty
  • Vin notices something's weird with Hoid and decides to avoid him.
  • Sanderson's explanation in the annotations of the background of the 16% thing that Vin notices is fascinating! https://www.brandonsanderson.com/annotation-mistborn-3-chapter-twenty-one-part-2/

I absolutely don't take it that way. It's been a rough month compounded by Covid-19. I have a reading schedule set up for allow of law. I'm going to format it properly and place it into the first post here shortly.

Alrighty, Starting Tomorrow we will begin Allow of Law!

I have updated the first post to include a new reading schedule. It starts off a little heavy at 60 pages because of the Prologue so start tonight with just the prologue if you want! I'll make a new post tomorrow to start us off.
