I find such behavior shameful and childish, and not worthy of one place like TarValon.net where, as I have understood, politeness and respect are important fundamentals.
I'm not going to bother being polite to someone who has repeatedly used bigoted and biased language from the start.

If you have something worthwhile to criticize, then speak up. So far all I've heard from you is whining about how tEh SjwS ARe RuINinG EVerYTHing.

There's ample justification in the books and in what Rafe has already said about the series for the first few episodes to first season centering on Moiraine more. Literally the only "argument" you've provided is "but feminism!!! :cry:cry:cry:cry"

So kindly, with the utmost civility and niceness, please either provide a cogent argument regarding your grievances or, if that is not possible for you (not due to any lack of imagination or thought on your part, because implying so would be an ad hominen attack), then perhaps you would consider actually not posting.

And now this stranger who isn't even part of our community has managed to completely derail conversation on the day we officially find out we're really going to get this show.
A really happy day, shredded because of this one very loud person.

Way to go, sir. Enjoy your chaos. You're the only one who will.

Arion, did you read the books?

The whole society is based on women in power.

Please go huddle yourself in fetal position within the Stone of Tear if you don't like it. Everywhere else in Randland is run by powerful women. This is consistent with the series. Huffy fanboys have been whining about this and calling Robert Jordan sexist the whole time this series has been published. Be upset if you like but this is 100% consistent with the books.

Well I have read and re-read and then re-read the books and so on, and I have NO problems with women being in power or them having a series created for them.

What I have a problem with is when they start changing the perspective of the books and start changing what the original creator had created.

I think there is a lot of strong women in the series and the hole thing was when I started reading the books back in the 1990 was a strange new exciting thing. I loved the way we got to see how a society run by women might have looked like, and I think it was great that Robert Jordan did write the way he did so that we did not only follow the main protagonists viewpoint but also many of the other characters.

This is also why I do not think there is any reason for them in the first place to announce that they will take Moiraine viewpoint of the story.

I believe that there is more than enough strong women and male characters in Wheel of Times to make everyone happy. And I see no need to point out this or that if the reason is not virtue signaling and that’s is really sad when it comes to a book like wheel of time were women like you say really have a main role in the story.

I think you're neglecting to consider the fact that this is not a staged reading of the books. It is - by necessity - something different. It will not be exactly as you, or I, or anyone wants. It will be something completely new that is, at its core, still Wheel of Time. But it will be re-imagined and re-interpreted. The exact same thing happened with Game of Thrones. Details, perspectives, characters change. They must. And I see nothing wrong with anything that's been presented.

In my mind, it is bizarre to go from "Moiraine is going to be the central perspective of the first season," and somehow morph that sentiment into: "this is a show about women for the ladies and how all dudes suck." I am a man and I couldn't be happier that Moiraine is going to feature prominently. She's a badass - regardless of what her sex/gender identity is. I'm excited to explore that.

One last word: I think that reducing those who believe strongly in equality to "social justice warriors" with tongue in cheek is a lot like if I decided to call all Christians delusional Bible-thumpers. I would not do that, and I do not believe that Christians are delusional. Most that I know do not thump their Bibles.

But showing disdain and sarcasm for someone else's dearly-held beliefs is part of what got us to this polarized political atmosphere. I hope we can all think about it in the reverse.

I am for one super stoked that the showrunner wrote Marvel material. I've been wanting that studio for years to get the rights to the old Doc Savage series, and I'm eager to see how the showrunner--who is a huge fan himself--will address WoT in adapting it to take it to the visual platform.

Most that I know do not thump their Bibles.
I just want to say, I've never thumped mine. In fact, I'm quite gentle with it. I don't thump many things to begin with /nodnod
:giggle

Ahem, anyway. So when I first heard about a TV show way back..well I don't know when, I was all like "Oh no! everything will be different, it's *never* like the books, and I'll hate it because of that!!"
But then someone suggested just looking at it like it's own thing, and not like an attempted copy of the books and my expectations just shifted.
Now seeing Rafe's updates and the very clear evidence of just how much he loves the books ( :love), I only get more and more excited with each new morsel of information.
I'm also excited to be a fan of a book series before it hits the screen, to be able to see all of this happening, even if the suspense is near maddening at times! This part is actually super important to me, that the books had enough of an impact that I'm still around to care about this!

Okay, I'm done gushing...for now

I really like that it seems like they're going to try pretty hard to keep secret who the Dragon actually is. I think that will really hook viewers who haven't read the books.

Very well-put, @Bruce al'Kay

Personally, while I love the books and what they have to say, I do have some criticisms in regards to gender politics. That doesn't take away from my love for them, and the impact they've had on my life.

From what I've seen from Rafe Judkins in regards to what he's planning, I think the show is going in the direction I'm hoping. That is, less of "women are inscrutable" from men, and "men are to be manipulated and managed" from women. :look:

I'm really looking forward to seeing the first season in Moiraine's perspective. While the books did an awesome job of world-building through the Two Rivers kids perspective, I think Moiraine will bring a better, "now what do we have here...?" perspective. :giggle

I think, it could become something great or something bad to watch for hardcore-fans like us.
Mainly it will mean they have to 'get' the world so that it is our wheel-of-time-world.

I think, when they do this POV of Moiraine, they can put New Spring and her beeing young at the tower at the beginning.
Should work.
I am very curious, if they will produce something great for us, which adds to our wheel of time feeling. :)

I'm excited about this! I am so happy that they found someone who is a fan of the series to write it. And I LOVE the idea of Moiraine being the perspective for the beginning. She is such an awesome character and I think it will be great to "discover" the Dragon Reborn with her.

I am really excited that I can share this with some of my friends. I have no close friends who have finished the series and just one who has started it. Like Game of Thrones, it's sure to get more people interested and there will be some people who love the TV series and are like "hm. Wonder how the books are...?"

I do wonder if that means we will get some scenes from New Spring as well? Maybe especially the part where the Prophesy is told :look:

I certainly hope so. It seems to me that a good bit of what happens in NS is integral to telling the whole story on the screen.

I only worry a bit, though, that focusing on an Aes Sedai character right out of the gate (especially the New Spring narrative) risks alienating the new viewer, who has a lot to download about who this woman is and what she is and who this society is, etc.

Part of the strength of the book's approach is that the trope of the simple farm boy living in a medieval village is one well known and easily digested, and then we'd be introduced to AS and the larger world step by step as the books do it.

Of course that risks feeling boring since everyone's seen that intro before.

Either way, I'm confident Judkins will give it his best.

I envision it starting with the first chapter of tEotW and having some scenes looking back on events--like the Foretelling--in NS as the story unfolds on the screen. It shouldn't jump around too much, but I think there could be room for going back in places to give some of the backstory where necessary. I've had people tell me that the Prologue in EotW made them not want to read on because they felt like there were already a lot of things they needed to know to understand it. But that's what rereads are for :)

Yeah, I've had people tell me the prologue is a lot to take in too. But, I also really like it when fasntasy books throw me into a world with little explanation. Makes me curious.

I hope they don't reach into New Spring too much in the first season. I think they can still have it in Moiraine's perspective without shoving Aes Sedai politics into the audience's face at the door.

Like, I'd be content just opening with Moiraine riding over a hill and looking down at the Two Rivers, and riding on in to town, you know? And yes, New Spring as later flashbacks is great.

But even with Moiraine as the audience character, it's a tall feat to truly conceal the Dragon Reborn. Cuz he's said he loves the scene on the road with Rand and Tam, as one of his favorite scenes.

So then.....is Mat going to get a similar dramatic scene with people important to him? And Perrin? Otherwise any savvy viewer can peg which of the boys is clearly going to be more central.
