Amazon has given a series order to an adaptation of Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time – marking a long and curious journey to the screen for the fantasy epic.

Amazon Prime Video will launch the one-hour series in over 200 countries and territories with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Chuck writer Rafe Judkins, who first found fame as a contestant on Survivor, adapting. It will be produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios.

The Wheel of Time had been in the works at Amazon for about a year, with new Head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Salke telling Deadline in June that she was set to read the script over the summer and the project was “very much alive”.

The Wheel of Time, which has sold over 90M books around the world, is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. The story follows Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the ‘Aes Sedai’ as she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women. Moiraine believes one of them might be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, whom prophecies say will either save humanity or destroy it. The series draws on numerous elements of European and Asian culture and philosophy, most notably the cyclical nature of time found in Buddhism and Hinduism.

Judkins serves as showrunner and executive producer, alongside Rick Selvage and Larry Mondragon of Red Eagle Entertainment, Ted Field and Mike Weber of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle producer Radar Pictures and Shrek Forever After producer Darren Lemke. Robert Jordan’s widow Harriet McDougal is a consulting producer.

The Wheel of Time has taken its time to get to screen; the multi-volume fantasy epic was first published in 1990. NBC optioned the rights in 2000 but didn’t progress; Jordan sold the TV, film, video game and comic rights to Red Eagle in 2004. In 2015, Red Eagle paid air time to cable network FXX to air Winter Dragon, a 22-minute Billy Zane-fronted “pilot” for a potential The Wheel of Time series that allowed Red Eagle to hold on to the rights to the project, a situation that was resolved with the Robert Jordan Estate in 2016.

“The Wheel of Time is endlessly fascinating and resonates hugely with fans as one of the best-selling global properties, and we were drawn to its timely narrative featuring powerful women at the core,” said Amazon’s Salke. “We’re thrilled to extend our relationship with devotees who’ve found the book series transformative and welcome new ones by bringing it to life on Prime Video for viewers worldwide.”

“Developing and producing Robert Jordan’s beloved fourteen-books-series for TV is a big undertaking, and we don’t take it lightly,” said Sharon Tal Yguado, Head of Event Series, Amazon Originals. “We believe that Rafe’s personal connection to the material and soulful writing will resonate with the book’s passionate fans.”

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to produce The Wheel of Time with our friends at Amazon,” said Sony Pictures Television Co-President Chris Parnell. “In Rafe Judkins, we’ve found a brilliant visionary that is a true fan of the books and ready to bring Robert Jordan’s world to life.”

Judkins added, “For so many people, including me, this book series has served as a world to escape to, to lose yourself in, to devour and inhabit completely. And I couldn’t be more honored to be the one finally bringing that world to life on screen, for old fans to lose themselves in all over again and new fans to discover for the very first time.”

Major takeaway from the article:
  • Moiraine will be the character we follow throughout season one. I think this is a great idea, because we can pretty easily guess at her motivations and thoughts while she's searching for the boys, and what happens when she gets to Emond's Field. It will also leave viewers in suspense about who The Dragon Reborn actually is. In the books, we follow Rand, so it's pretty obvious he's The Dragon Reborn, but this will make it more of a guessing game, depending on how they do it.

I do wonder if that means we will get some scenes from New Spring as well? Maybe especially the part where the Prophesy is told :look:

Unfortunately, I think this is more due to this ridiculous gender struggle that is currently taking place in society, and this idea of rewriting all cultures to have a female perspective.

I'm not against the fact that there are comics or films with female protagonists, but the whole series of Jordan begins with "Rand and Tam that are on their way to Emond's field where Rand meets Moiraine and Lan. And then his trip back to Tam's farm where they are being attacked.

Had it not been for all this political correctness, etc. I would not have reacted, but unfortunately, it seems that everything have to be rewritten and angled completely wrong in relation to how Jordan's books are meant and written and had Jordan lived and said that HE thinks these changes were alright, well then the case had been another.

I'm not wrong with the fact that there are comics or films with female protagonists, but the whole series to Jordan begins with "Rand and Tam are on his way to Emond's field where he meets Moiraine and Lan and trips his home to Tam's farm where they are being attacked.

Had it not been for all this bullshit bullet, etc. I would not have reacted, but unfortunately, it seems that ALT is too much to be rewritten and angled completely wrong in relation to how Jordan's books are meant and written and had Jordan lived and said that HAN thinks these changes were alright, well then the case had been another.
1. Harriet McDougal, who is Jordan's widow and also edited all of the books, is on the team for the show. If you don't trust her, just say you hate women and go.

2. Who is featured front and center on the original cover for Eye of the World?
WoT01_TheEyeOfTheWorld.jpg

3. Rand and Tam in the Westwood is Rafe's favorite moment in the book. Chances are, as show runner, he'll make sure that scene gets in.
@jordanclindsey: What is your favorite moment in Book 1, and why (and do you plan on having characters sniff!) Thank you!
Rafe Judkins: My favorite moment is Rand and Tam in the Westwood. It’s so iconic to me and gives me the “this is happening” feels

4. I can't find the citation right now but Rafe has also said that they plan on making it more of a slow reveal that Rand is the Dragon. Centering Moirarine's finding of the Emond's Fielders and their journey rather than initially focusing on Rand facilitates this.

5. If you weren't such a misogynist you'd realize that this is the first official press release that the show has been greenlit. You'd take a moment to possibly think that maybe they're not going to go into deep details because actually, based on past trends, the majority of the audience of the TV show will be people who have never read the books.

6. I have no idea who you are but you smearing your hurt feelings everywhere because a press release decided not to spoil the series for people who haven't read the books is incredibly tiresome.

7. You don't have to like what they're doing. It's your call if you want to be miserable and whiny. But kindly stop ruining it for everyone else. Your consistent efforts to try to paint things you don't like as "sjw nonsense" and "ridiculous gender struggle" is incredibly telling of your deep-seated fears and insecurities about not being centered in media. And what's more, that fear is founded on literally nothing because ultimately the story is still about the Dragon Reborn. Who is a dude. You just can't stand that for a few episodes it might be ambiguous that he's the star of the show.

In short, get over yourself. If you want to contribute in a meaningful way, then by all means, do so. Otherwise, I, personally, myself, me only speaking for myself and no one else, find your whining quite unsavory.

This. As someone who already read the books (and as you said, the books don't make it hard to guess who the Dragon is) I just want to be that annoying person watching the faces of all those who've never read the books as they watch the show :D
Just so many things that will wow them or blow their minds! I want to see them fall in love with the characters :cry

Arion, you're welcome here, regardless of your viewpoints or opinions. By all means, present your opinions and engage in conversations defending them.

However, Eluial's earliest points (1-4) are quite apt here. There's no chance that the show won't gradually focus more and more on Rand. Rafe isn't changing the core of the books.

Hey, look...I'm a conservative Christian from head to toe, and happy to call out pointless cultural artifacts with no purpose, like the all-girl Ghostbusters remake. I flatter myself that I'm fairly attuned to sjw shenanigans.

But I'm not hearin' them here, dude. So far Judkins seems to have a pretty earnest and solid head on his shoulders, and wants to adapt the books as authentically as possible.

I’m just hoping they’ll find a way to cut Rand from the series entirely. By book 2 I was rooting for Rand to die, even if it meant the Dark One would win. That would have been a small price to pay for the relief from Rand. :x

I’m happy to hear the show will start with Moiraine’s perspective. I think it’ll make it a much more engaging story, plus make the end of book 5 more potent (assuming thhe show makes it that far).

Eluial Ardaran the fact that you must resort to personal attacks and think it promotes your views shows that your views are not substantiated because if they did, you would not have to resort to it.

As far as my views are concerned, I think it is incorrect to change the focus and I would rather see that the vision of the earth is rather than a politically correct vision as it seems that one wishes to do now. If they change this or I am mistaken, it may be, but it's my impression from what has been said so far.

You can of course disagree with me and argue for why you think I'm wrong, but resorting to personal attacks becomes childish and does not reinforce your claim that I'm not using my brain cells.

As I have said, I have NO problems with making a series of women in the lead role or the like but I do NOT like changing a series just to satisfy some (**censored due to political correctness**) feminists who according to statistics only are supported by about 5% of women if we look at the numbers in the United States, UK, Norway or the rest of the West.

My point is to keep politics away from the television adoption of books, comics, etc. as it's the original works people have become fans of and not a politically correct change of the original. But what do I know: I'm a misogynistic assha who can't use my brain cells.

Well, at least I can say that even without using my brain cells, I have enough intrigue not to go to a person's attack on you or anyone who disagrees with me, and I do not dare to name calling.

I hope you're right, but unfortunately, they seem to be politically correct editing rather than a series that tries to follow Jordan's vision.

As I said earlier, I may be wrong, and I hope I'm wrong.

But I would like to make a little criticism of you when giving your support to Eluial's four points, so you should at least point out that you do not support her personal attacks and name calling.

I find such behavior shameful and childish, and not worthy of one place like TarValon.net where, as I have understood, politeness and respect are important fundamentals.

But maybe it also changed the time I've been gone?

Arion, you've done nothing in this forum but trash this show, and it doesn't even exist yet. If you hate something that doesn't even exist that much, DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO IT.

If your goal is to make those of us who *are* excited angry, then way to go, you get the ribbon. Happily, this site has an "ignore" function, and I'm going to merrily use it on you so I no longer have to see your posts. I encourage others to do the same if they're also feeling annoyed by all the killing of buzz coming from this one person who doesn't even have the courtesy to follow our site's rules in naming, who barely even bothered to find an avatar that fits our size (it's a square. It's an easy proportion to fill out), and who hasn't bothered to try to even become a citizen yet. And, I suppose there may be some you haven't pissed off yet who would be willing to sponsor you, but... Good luck.

Happily, unlike real life, this site has a mute switch for people like you.

If anyone doesn't know, all you have to do to ignore all posts from someone who's managed the bare minimum of creating a profile is: click on their name, you'll see the box that says "Profile Page, Start a Conversation, Follow" and the last item is "Ignore." You won't see that person's posts any more, though there will be a note at the bottom of your screen when that person's posts are quoted by someone else on the page that lets you know there's ignored content. That bit is the only indication you'll ever get that they're still on this site, and while it's still a bit jarring (I've only ever used this on one person, but it's very useful for this purpose) it's way better than seeing their words that cause me instant rage.

And, because I refuse to let unpleasantness sidetrack this conversation (although at time of editing, that ship has officially sailed) :

Did anyone see Rafe's tweet about - one of the Amazon execs (I think) even said "Tai'shar Manetheren" to Rafe. I looooooove how much it seems like the major decision makers of this show are actual honest to goodness fans!

It sounds almost like they're starting with New Spring and then going into EOTW. The stuff RJ2 has posted on Twitter could be a snapshot from any point in the first episode. Also keep in mind that between concept and final product, there is a whole lotta editing that will take place to make sure things are cohesive, make sense, and are in RJ1's roadmap that is the whole series.

Arion, did you read the books?

The whole society is based on women in power.

Please go huddle yourself in fetal position within the Stone of Tear if you don't like it. Everywhere else in Randland is run by powerful women. This is consistent with the series. Huffy fanboys have been whining about this and calling Robert Jordan sexist the whole time this series has been published. Be upset if you like but this is 100% consistent with the books.

You're just noise. And happily, unlike real life, this site has a mute switch for gnats like you.

Again I must say that I just gave my opinion on what has been said and announced about the show and I did not expect that people would be calling me names and go to personal attacks like you people do for it.

As to you calling me out for my Avatar and for not bothering to apply for citizenship I would let you know I was a recruit of TarValon back “I think 2006/8” As I first joined the site for about 12 years or so ago and I have never ever been attacked by anyone like this simply wording my opinions.

People may disagree with what I say and I will still respect them. But I will never start calling them names or attacking them in other ways to smear their integrity.

It is sad to see that people are willing to do this just because some one say something that they does not agree with.

If that is the case I think it would be ok for them to take this approach. But as Rafe Judkins announced on twitter I was of the opinion that the show would start with Rand and Tam and Bella just like the books.

this ridiculous gender struggle
Ridiculous, right? Why can't women just go back to closing their eyes and thinking of England whenever men want to rape them?

this idea of rewriting all cultures to have a female perspective.
Right? It's not like women are people and have existed and had perspectives on their cultures this whole time.

Had it not been for all this political correctness, etc. I would not have reacted
Oh my god, guys, is THIS what it feels like to not be the center of every story for once??!?!?!!!?!?

hysterical feminists
I would say that the use of a phrase like this automatically disqualifies you from being taken seriously ever again, but let's face it... You have made yourself impossible to take seriously from the start.
