Usage of the glossary?

Hello everyone! I've always been curious ever since I started reading these books, how many people use the glossary at the end of the book to tell them how to pronounce the words? I didn't look at the glossary until I was completely done with the first book and by that time my mind had already decided how certain words and names were pronounced. Many of them wrong lol but when I am reading I still pronounce them in my head the way that I always have. So my question is, when you come across a strange word ( which we all know happens often in this series), do you look up how it's pronounced? Or do you just read it however you want to?

For my first read-through, I used the glossaries a lot! I love language, and I wanted to know the right way to say things. It's always interesting to hear other people pronounce some of these words when I meet them in person.

The biggest hurdle was when I started listening to the audiobooks. It took quite a while for me to get over how they pronounced a lot of the words that the glossaries indicated should be pronounced another way. I still can't stand how they say "Tar Valon," and sometimes they just completely mangle a word.

But! I know that everyone has a different experience with these words while reading the books, so I don't actually correct anyone when I hear a word pronounced differently than I think they should be. :)

I've only read the audio books, so I pronounce everything like the narrators did.

But I did read the books, I'd likely use it and try to pronounce them correctly. If I'm not certain how to pronounce a word or name I'll often end up just skipping over it instead of actually reading it.

I didn't know there was a glossary until the end of the first book, but as soon as I found it I used pretty regularly. I did have to work on altering some of my own pronunciations. The tough one for me was Nynaeve.

This is me, too. The audiobooks is where I learned all my pronunciation and also the reason why I can't spell literally anything in Wheel of Time without looking it up first.

I'm trying to get my boyfriend to read the books but he only wants to do the audio books. I don't think I could do it that way because i already have opinions about how they sound.

I read the glossaries but not the pronunciation part :look: But I do decide in my head how something is pronounced, and that is when I notice that I am not a native English speaker... I pronounce every letter in Siuan for instance :look:

I still use the glossary occasionally on rereads, mostly for information rather than pronunciation. But I do like to pronounce names/words as RJ intended, and since he went to the trouble to include a guide it is important to me. Although if memory serves--sometimes it doesn't --I seem to recall instances where the pronunciation differed in the glossary from one book to another, but they were rare instances. In the YA split versions of tEotW and tGH, I believe he added some additional words not included in the original Tor and Orbit editions of those books.

There was a video on YouTube of RJ at a signing where he went over a few names and words, but I can't seem to find it now. :(

I actually often flip to the back of a book before I read it, to see if it has a glossary and then read up on stuff so I can hit the ground running with the story. I learned that after reading some other books that had glossaries because they had so many acronyms in the story that they didn't explain in the story >,<

On my first read-through I didn't realize there was a glossary. Once I got to that point, though, I did take the time to go back and re-train myself on how to say everything.

I did the same thing. I read the first book and then at the end realize there was a glossary. I did kind of attempts to retrain myself but it's too hard LOL it interrupts my flow of reading. I read very quickly where it's like a movie in my head and if I have to stop and correct myself it's like pressing pause on the movie and then play and then pause over and over again

I always use the glossary. I've been made fun of (not in a bad way) for pronouncing things wrong - especially when I read books and there was a TV show or movie that I hadn't seen - so if there is an official way to say it, I make sure to know it!

In the audiobooks, they change up the pronunciation somewhat, but after the first few books they seem to get it down pat (like they actually looked in the glossary for once). I really enjoyed listening to them and my husband likes them as well.

I totally get that! That's one reason I am equal parts excited and and concerned about the WoT television series being developed; it's a movie I've already seen in a very particular way. :look:

Yeah I heard someone say that in order to enjoy it we have to go in not thinking of it as The Wheel of Time but thinking of it as kind of something completely new. That way we won't get too disappointed if things don't work out how we pictured them in the books. But I am very excited that it's being made by a hardcore fan. It makes me feel a little better about it LOL
