For many years now this community has watched with a compassionate eye as tragedies of all sorts have struck- Super Storms, Earthquakes, Bombings, School Shootings- each matched with a horrific loss of life and each a true emergency. We've sometimes been able to aid those in need in the aftermath of these emergencies, as was the case with the Boston Bombing- but at other times we've been unable to respond in a meaningful way.

For many years now, TarValon.Net, Inc has also sought a way to respond. As a community we have asked the administration what we can do, and as an administration we've struggled with the best ways to respond. In 2013 in the aftermath of the Boston Bombing, we ran the previous no-host Blood Drive, there were a lot of participants but not all could during the time that it was running because they donated at a different time of the year. Nevertheless this was- at last- the appropriate response and serves to inspire future responses. Donating blood saves lives, and in the aftermath of tragedies having well stocked blood banks can make all the difference. In 2014, we held a year long Blood Drive that was a huge successes, resulting in the donation of 41 pints of blood, and in 2015 we donated 32 pints of blood!

For 2017 we are hosting another year-long Blood Drive, to both support those that give blood regularly and to encourage others to give blood. We recognize that this isn’t for everyone, and not everyone can give blood. Yet there are those that can and one of the problems that most Blood Banks run into is that people only give blood after disasters, and usually just the once. Blood is often needed weeks before hand and even after, it has a short shelf life and they need every drop year round. This year-long event is designed to address these needs year-round so that instead of reacting, as a community, we are preparing.

All donations beginning January 1, 2017 through December 31, 2017 can be reported using the following form:

Data collected with this form is intended to get an accurate count of donated pints throughout 2015, you will notice only four required questions. Also, we've included a section where you can share what blood bank you donated to! This information will be used to help other members locate a local blood bank they can donate to.

:blood1

Here is a collection of Signatures, Badges and even an Icon or two that we encourage you to wear through the year- whether you can or will donate yourself- spreading the word is key.

I didn't donate at all last year because I was financially uncertain and wanted to leave the option open to go "donate" plasma. Now that I'm in a better job, I think I'll start donating again!

Btw, do you want us to make a note if we do double-reds? I'm not sure if that makes a difference for your reporting or not, because it also affects the frequency at which a person can donate.

Such a great way to give back- I donate pretty regularly, but always seem to forget to come in here. :look:

I'll do better this year! :p

Hello All,

I think that this is a good way to give back and be recognized by the community.

I have to admit that I'm only able to donate about 3 times a year in my county I shamefully only recorded 1 will try harder to record all of my donations this year. I'm aiming for good year.

please help the community by donating yourselves the organisations are on the initial post by Ahyawnah.

DONATE TODAY...

Martinis.

You don't have to mark if you do double red. :pleased-1: All that matters is that you donate. :joy

I usually donate every two months like clockwork, but as I'm currently trying to become a mother, I can't right now. :(

What is going to be our goal for this year?
The stats of our blood drives are as follows:

2014 - 42 pints donated
2015 - 32 pints donated
2016 - 16 pints donated D:

2017 - ?

We are trending downward, and that means less lives saved. :(
I bet we could get to 30 pints again this year. What do you all think?

I concur Aes Sedai. But if we all do our bit we could easily do it. I may only get 1-3 pints this year though unforunately.

Let's keep this thread current so it stays in people's minds. A lot of people just get busy with life and don't think about it.

In other news, I'm eligible to give again! I have an appointment for the 14th of February. How appropriate!

I normally give every two months, which is what is allowed in the states. But as I'm currently attempting to become a mommy, alas, I am not allowed to give. So everyone else now has to make up the gap. :indifferent: Yes, I'm looking a you. You know who you are. :shifty

Apparently in Canada they upped they # of days between donations for women only. Something about noticing a lot of women don't have a safe amount of iron (or something else, I don't remember) built back up in time. There were some grumpy ladies.

The last almost-year I've been .2 iron points too low to donate literally every time I've gone in. It's sort of ridiculous, because I even started taking supplements for awhile and it still didn't rise. Making another attempt tomorrow. Fingers crossed for a .2 rise.:P

I never used to have this issue, and I don't know why it is now. The lower limit is 12.4 or something and I used to always be above 13. Idk, man. Idk.

Well, my hemoglobin was 14.4, so that's great. What's not great was the entire rest of it. Bad, bad afternoon. Not feeling well.

I double-checked last week to see if perhaps I could donate blood again under certain conditions (e.g. being off certain medication, my UC being stable for a certain period of time, etc.) but alas, no dice. For now, at least, I'm permanently unable to donate blood again.

So if there's anybody on the fence about donating, please try and donate if you can! Do it on behalf of myself and all those who want to help but are unable to.
