Re: Knife of Dreams re-readalong: Chapters 8-12

Oh! And I had a thought.

Did we see wardings on food and supplies not working before saidin was cleansed? I think we did.

But if not, what if the wardings go bad because of the cleansing, because ALL of saidin was filtered through saidar, and saidar was like a container for the taint, and what if that massive amount of power had effects?

Or it's just TDO's touch. :look:

Re: Knife of Dreams re-readalong: Chapters 8-12

Mother, I think it was just the increased potency of the DO's touch. The Saidar conduit Rand used to cleanse Saidin did not expose Saidar to the taint. And I think the cleansing did not involve filtering all of Saidin ... It was directing enough of Saidin through that conduit over Shadar Logoth to remove all of the DO's taint (which was finite/quantified as opposed to infinite Saidin).

The food spoilage was part the DO's touch and part Rand's darkness, as shown in Bander Eban's food supplies. The darker Rand became, the more food spoiled. Cadsuane pondered over it when she asked about the balance of Rand's presence in Bander Eban. She was worried that more of the bad part was manifested; and no good things like when Rand was in Cairhien. But I guess you can bring that back to the DO as well since Rand accessed the True Power when Semirhage collared him, and was linked to the DO.

Oh gosh, now I'm imagining an alternate world where the attempt to cleanse saidin resulted in saidar being tainted as well. :eek

KoD 7 – It is a good thing that I am not Mat Cauthon. If I were Mat all 5 of these children and their warder's would be Tied up on the edge of their beds and would have to be fed like babies. Seriously the crap Mat puts up with from Joline is completely unacceptable. Also it is amazing just how many People bring up Cadsuane who never talked about her until she showed up in Book 6.

I frankly would have Collared her after she slapped me.

KoD 8 – Oh I would have freaked out here if I were Mat, the idea of more than one set of dice rattling around would make me want to puke, also I am not too sure Mat is correct with his assumption that all of the men he has the memories of visited the Snakes and Foxes. The Story of the Tower of Ghenjei are all quite old and are generally considered fairy tails so I doubt that the amount of generals that Mat has in his mind would go through the Tower, especially in some of the large chunks that he has, he has several from around the Trolloc Wars from different people. Wasn't there one of two different people seeing the Hawkwing at different points in his life? Actually doesn't he have like half a dozen memories of people who were beaten over by Hawkwing?

Re: Knife of Dreams re-readalong: Chapters 13-18

I'm a bit ahead of thescheduled reading/listening. My two random thoughts:
- this is the first book where I've five myself getting irritated with the clothing descriptions. It never bothered me before but now it is making me roll my eyes again and again.
- this book also has several scenes that make me a bit teary: Loial and the other Ogier taking up axes to fight the trollocs, and later the men of Manetheran rallying to Nyneave's call. <3 :cry

KOD – 9:While I am against Slavery, these Aes Sedai TOTALLY deserved to get collared here, They have deserved a nice knocking down a peg for the way they have treated Mat for the past 2 books, especially throwing rocks at him.

KOD – 10: And here it is, Thom's letter that was set up in book 5, so long ago at this point revealing that Moraine is alive, Mat reveals his meetings with the Snakes and Foxes, something he never really discusses with Perrin or Rand in any way, which is sad. We never really got a final meeting between the main Trio where they lay everything on the table and talk like friends who grew up together.

KOD – 11: Oh Thom, you silly old guy pretending not to see Selucia beat the holy heck out of a group of dark friends, and is completely subtle about pretending not to see. *cough*

KOD -12: Apparently someone that was a Dark Friend recognized Perrin and tried to shoot him.

KOD 13: Not much going on here, a small steps chapter. We see Elayne command troops and try to defend her wall, and then get a huge infusion of Queen's Guards. Apparently really only the Nobility seems to blame Morgaise for what she did. Part of me wonders if Rand didn't completely bungle the entirety of his time in Andor.

Edit : This weeks stuff.

KOD 14: This chapter title could be taken so out of context, and that is about as much I can say. More Courtly things with Elayne. I love her plan to send the Sul'dam who is asking for an A'dam back to Ebou Dar. That would put a thorn in the Seanchan's palm.

KOD 15: Oh this set up with Aviendha with her being able to tell us what Ter'angreal are meant to do and it never pays off, especially with the big mystery stuff like the testing Ter'angreal.

KOD 16: So Elane and Birgitte trust Mellar so little that they have him followed.

KOD 17: More Kin are dead, and no movement on the Siege.

KOD 18: So Logain took a good many folks out of the Black Tower? How did Androl and the like get missed from being gathered up by Taim?

Re: Knife of Dreams re-readalong: Chapters 19-23

I may have finished the book. :look:

I also got teary eyed when the Ogier took up axes to fight, and then when the mother and wife had weapons at the ready to defend at the stairwell. (Just got chills thinking of it again.) And when the cry for Manetheren went up.

Al'Amar, I'd forgotten about Rand's darkness affecting things.

Probably. The memories were given at random, so we could definitely expect to see clusters around major generals/leaders like Hawkwing.

Going back to the Chapter with the Tuathuan. I had another thought.

How exactly are the Seanchan going to react to the tinker channeling girls when the tinkers see them out in the world and completely fawn over them, and how the tinker girls will very likely show lots of pity for the Sul'dam.

Oof. There's an awful thought: A Tinker channeler being broken to damane. Not only to the leash but to being a weapon and doing -- or receiving, if she doesn't obey -- violence. *shudder*

Oh it is a terrible thought Mother, but A tinker channeler would probably be..the most stalwart and stand up against the training the best. The Sul'dam would get creeped out when the Damane pities her.

As usual for me, I'm on-track on reading, behind on typing up my notes. :cheeseeni: I blame grad school.

A Tinker Damane would certainly be interesting to watch! Though I still choose to believe that Mat and the knowledge of sul'dam being able to channel ends the whole practice in Seanchan. :indifferent:

Re: Knife of Dreams re-readalong: Chapters 19-23

If I am optimistic, I can believe that the practice was gradually abolished, but sadly, I am not optimistic :( IF, and that is a BIG IF, the deal that Egwene made with Tuon actually gets implemented, maybe they will eventually run out of damane, but sadly, I do't think it will. Because no other mainlander was there to witness it, only Egwene, and we don't know how much she had time to tell the others. Tuon showed already that she has no trouble backing out of deals, if she deems it right, and in this I think she will feel in the right...

The Golden Crane flies for Tarmon Gaidon!!!

I remember the first time I read that. It sent shivers down my spine :pleased-1: I wanted to make a signature with that quote, but it is probably a little too spoilery :look:

Re: Knife of Dreams re-readalong: Chapters 19-23

These chapters are when the book and the whole series really felt like it started picking up steam again, at least to me. The first part of the book was interesting, but just not super excited about it. Then suddenly these last few chapters it feels like stuff is really happening and I don't want to put it down. :pleased-1:

Re: Knife of Dreams re-readalong: Chapters 19-23

I agree :) The two drawn out storylines comes to an end (Perrins vs Shaido and Elaynes ascend to the throne) and a lot of excellent stuff start happening. The only letdown is Rands storyline, who is on a downward spiral all through the next book :look:

Part of me wonders if that shouldn't have been in the Prologue, the very first thing we see, it would have been a great way to signal "Okay guys, COT was the last low point in the action, from here on out the story is going towards the climax."

Re: Knife of Dreams re-readalong: Chapters 19-23

Prologue:
-The Seanchan don’t trust the Children. Smart of them.
-Lots of people know about the void, but call it different things. To Galad’s teachers, it’s the oneness.
-The Seanchan have apparently captured a bunch of Children of the Light and are making them work. The Children want to find allies against the Seanchan to make sure they can fight in the Last Battle.
-Galad accepts that Aes Sedai will be their allies in the Last Battle. He’s definitely the commander the Children need for the Last Battle
-We see Ituralde’s independent battle against the Seanchan. Go, Ituralde! :swordy
-He feels good about his plan, short of the Dragon Reborn appearing in front of him… well, just wait. :p
-Suroth figures out quite a bit, such as Egeanin being involved with Seta and Renna… but then dismisses it and figures Egeanin was too stressed out about being raised to the Blood.
-Liandrin tries to kill Suroth. Surprising how lightly she gets off, since Suroth clearly knows what she was doing… plus she’s pissed about Liandrin killing Alwhin for no reason.
-Sul’dam don’t usually turn Darkfriend for some reason. Odd.
-Suroth thinks Asunawa is weird for hating damane.
-Semirhage reveals to Suroth that the entire Imperial Family is dead… Suroth understandably freak sout. Then she quickly gets super excited about how awesome it’ll be to be Empress. :p
-Galina is believed to be dead at Dumai’s Wells.
-The Head of the Red Ajah is simply called the Highest.
-The White Tower can keep tapestries intact for as long as they want with wardings. :)
-Pevara still feels a kinship with Elaida due to her Ajah and wants her to succeed for the sake of the Ajah.
-…and the Black Ajah hunters learn Elaida’s real aim and that they’re not actually backed by Elaida. :\
-The White Ajah quarters sound very serene and pleasant. :) Very simple, but beautiful landscape tapestries with white walls.
-The Black Ajah knows why the wardings are failing.
-I love the Egwene-infiltrating-the-Tower plot! :joy
-Katerine and Barasine are openly threatening Berisha. :facepalm
-Egwene did not think things through like Leane did. She didn’t invert her weave. :desk
-Even Elaida wouldn’t force Egwene to take the Accepted test again.
-Egwene reveals her Dream about the Seanchan attack on the Tower.

I just read.... “Trollocs coming! Up axes and clear the field! Trollocs coming!” and it did send shivers down my spine. That whole battle actually.
