I hope you'll catch up to us in the re-read Thaddius. It has been a great experience for me to have random discussions with the group on the things we're reading at that time. I've read this series more times than I can count, but never with anyone reading concurrently, so that has been a real treat for me. :D

That is most excellent. I've never really had anyone to discuss the series with as I read it, despite reading it over the last 17 years. Hopefully I can catch up with you all quickly enough!

Even after reading the series half a dozen times; my eyes are watery a few times each book. With 14 books, that's a lot of tears.

I remember my heart aching for Nynaeve when she made her feeling known to Lan in EotW after first reading EotW.

I teared up when my audiobooks got to the point when Perrin learns what happened to his family. It didn't affect me as much just reading it the first time, but Kramer's voicework is probably what gave it that extra emotion.

Then my shock regarding Siuan in AMoL. I was too guarded after that point. :(

One of the most emotional parts for me is Moiraine's battle with Lanfear at the Cairhien docks and Rand's reading of her letter. That's quite a few tissue papers. The steadiness and bravery of knowing that tomorrow will be your death; and still being collected and in control so as not to hurt the others around her. Then her heroism in tackling Lanfear through the ter'angreal doorframe. And that letter with Rand crying for the first time in a long time. Then the maidens (Sulin) come in and force Rand to give them their freedom of choice; despite all the pain that causes him. ... Then, Rand seeing Aviendha's face after Rahvin kills her. The ending to book 5 is that of many tears.

In my reread, I discovered another scene that made me cry.
When Verin showed up to Egwene drinking her poisoned tea and betraying the Dark One with all the composure worthy of an Aes Sedai.

That one gets me all the time, Dnai Gaidin. So many emotions there!
My latest emotion is bewilderment at the possibility that Verin's life could have been saved. There were minutes between sleep and actual death; and Egwene sat there making sure she died instead of trying anything. Light, you could have at least shouted for help, or ran out and maybe bump into an Aes Sedai. Anything!!! Even if the result wasn't guaranteed.

Well...
There's two things I'm thinking on this.
First, I think Verin would have been careful to select a poison that could not be Healed. I'm not sure if that was mentioned, but if that was the case, Egwene would have known it, with her background in herbs.
Second, if that ended up not being Verin's last hour, that would mean she had broken her oath to the Dark One, and what kind of horrors would that have brought on her head?

There was a loophole in the Dark oaths that Verin exploited. If she would have been saved. She'd have remained silent till Egwene fetches the oath rod to release her of her oaths. Then she'd be free like Talene (but not known to the BA that she's exposed them). As to the poison, all poisons can be healed with the OP. Anything short of death can be healed :)

Yes, but here's the sticking point: Verin tried to find the oath rod and was unable to, therefore she drank the poison so she could reveal the Shadow's secrets. By the time Egwene knew that Verin could have been released by the oath rod and thus saved, Verin had already revealed that she was Black, so her betrayal was already begun. At that point, it was too late to be released from the oath. If she didn't die, she would have betrayed the Dark One while she had still been bound by her oath. I don't think he would care that she was released after the fact. The deed was done. Only by dying within the hour could she have exploited the loophole and avoided his wrath.

An Aes Sedai can tell a lie if she believes that it is the truth. Verin exploited the loophole and was able to bypass the Dark oaths. If she was saved of the poison, she would not have been able to betray the Dark One further. But the betrayal that was done cannot be undone. It is a weakness of the oaths.

And if we look at Verin's work over the past 70 years, it was in reality exploiting the oaths and betraying the Dark One. She helped Rand on many occasions. When there were no direct orders from the Foresaken, she had some freedom to do as she wished. And Verin's warder, Tomas, was looking for a way out. Verin offered him that; and they both worked against the Shadow despite their oaths.

If the Dark Oaths were very tight outside the last hour of one's life, Verin would not have been able to do all that work to identify the Black Ajah or to help Rand.

In the end, it was a matter of Egwene finding one of the ferrets to bring her the oath rod to release Verin from the oaths (if she would have been healed from the poison).

I read a few people saying that they cried when they finished the last book just because the series is over.
I've read A Memory of Light more than once now and I still cry each time I get to the end!
I didn't cry the first time I finished it but after reading people say that they cried I can't stop!
So now I'm crying and I blame all of you! ;):embarassed:

When Lan charges Demandred and kills him. I cried a bit on that one!

The most Surprising one was when Olver looks up and finds NOAL standing over him. That was the hardest Cry I had had in a long time. Olver knows EVERYONE leaves him! But here a true friend comes back from beyond the Grave and lets him know that he is cared for. I am tearing up right now Just thinking about it!

I teared up a few times, but I don't think I actually cried much. However, I do have a little story to tell -

I can't afford new books anymore - they've become far too expensive - and so it was a real treat for me to decide that I was going to pre-order the brand new HARDBACK copy of 'Memory of Light' so I'd have it as soon as it came out. :) I'd managed to time my rather erratic reading (and re-reading) of the rest of the series so I'd just finished Towers of Midnight in time for MoL.

Then I went and cried all over it and I don't remember ever doing that much damage to a book before :(

It's been over three years now since MoL released and I finished the series. I still feel a bit lost without continually reading/re-reading the books. I haven't really been able to start another series since then. I always get side tracked some how. I want to do another re-read of the whole series and I think after JordanCon, I really feel energized to get started on that re-read.

I had the same problem when I finished the series. Ive enjoyed the Game of Thrones (got into it before it was cool, too) but its hard to invest in a character when they keep dying. Sanderson's Way of Kings has been good so far but its so clearly inspired by the WoT I have a hard time not comparing them. David Hare (or is it Hair? I dunno) wrote a book called Mage's Blood, and that was.....that was a hell of a thing. But again, its not the same. Have you read Gladiator, by Phillip Wilde? It's from the early-mid 30's, was a major inspiration for Superman, and is actually quite interesting and very sad at the end.

Anyway.

Ive never cried while reading the books, because you know, Im super macho and all. But one scene that really hit hard, that haunts me to this day, was in....Dragon Reborn, I think? Rand's headed to Tear, running away from his friends, chased by dark hounds, confused, scared out of his mind and utterly alone. And there's this one quick scene where Rand is sitting in front of his fire in the middle of the night, listening to the dark hounds in the distance, and he's rocking back and forth playing the same song over and over on Thom's flute. That was the most heart-wrenching moment in the entire series for me. I think a part of me died.

Spoilers for Memory of Light and some books before that although husband is not being helpful recalling exactly which ones. Just a sampling but some of the worst.

Egwene's death killed me. Like I just thought about it to write this and I feel like I've been punched and I'm tearing up. To be fair it's only been like two or three weeks (read that scene for the first time on Christmas Eve, finished the series on Boxing Day), but I still can't stop crying.

The scene where Rand is on Dragonmount made me start crying, and I cried through the whole prologue of the next book, and part of the first chapter. Good thing it was on audio book or I couldn't have gotten far enough ever. Especially the kid that his dad gave him the sword and told him he was a man but they're all going to die and ... okay enough of that I teared enough I couldn't see to type.

Looking things up in the Encyclopedia about Tam I learned that he and Keri had two children: a daughter who died of fever as a baby and a stillborn son. That one still hurts a lot too.

long story short: oww my heart
