Total ignorance never stops Elayne from doing something dangerous!

Well it had nothing to do with Ignorance, Elayne was attempting to prevent the Seanchan from getting the weaves for Gateways. Which is 100% a sensible thing to risk your life for.

It wasn't about the logic of keeping Traveling from the Seanchan (not a certainty since it wasn't guaranteed a damane could read residues; and futile since they ended up getting Traveling anyway). It was about Elayne totally ignorant about unweaving; listening to AS and Aviendha say on how dangerous it is; knowing that Aviendha was trained by WO's to do it. But she still decided to unweave despite all of that. And this isn't the only time Elayne does something like that. It is standard procedure for her.

Regardless of the merits and heroism involved; it still shows a reckless streak even before Min's viewing about her babes ... a death wish according to Sanderson and Birgette :)

It's certainly reckless and could have gone disastrously wrong. Though I wouldn't say it was 100% impulsive. She did have a good reason behind it. Yes, she didn't know what she was doing and didn't listen to their warnings about the dangers, but the reason she did it was sound. She didn't know whether or not damane could residues, but she didn't want to take that risk. Not saying it was a great idea on her part (as she shows after the explosion, she didn't totally understand how dangerous the procedure was!), but she did have a good reason for doing it at least.

True, she had a very good reason for her unweaving. That was never in doubt :D

I'm finally caught up on typing up my notes! :joy :joy Ready for the reread to recommence. :)

Chapter 24:
-Rand’s plan fools the Seanchan for awhile. There are so many groups of enemies and all seen so spread out that they surely can’t be the same group.
-Suroth is the one to inform them that the enemy has been Traveling.
-Miraj wonders what Suroth’s sources are. Perhaps she learned some of this from her Darkfriend sources.
-Miraj thinks that it ‘might be true’ that the Dragon Reborn can channel. Interesting that he isn’t certain. Is this a personal opinion? Or something most Seanchan believe? We know the Seanchan prophecies are not identical to the ones we’re familiar with.
-it’s known that experienced sul’dam can sometimes see weaves of saidar.
-Dashiva hiding as an Asha’man makes sense. He doesn’t really try to hide and act ‘normal’ (always muttering to himself and shunning the others), but around other men who are slowly going mad, he just fits in.
-Dashiva sounds like a teaching lecturing a student while telling Rand about the weirdness with saidin. He’s a Forsaken and he’s worried. That’s not a good sign.
-Rand dismiss him and tells him that he’s been channeling for longer than Dashiva and knows what he’s talking about. :facepalm Dashiva gets understandably pissed. I actually sympathize with the Forsaken here. Rand is so reckless in this fight. :desk :desk Rand didn’t even notice what the weirdness was until Dashiva showed it to him.
-In a society where baldness is a sign of nobility and status, people go bald naturally have to wear wigs.
-When speaking of attacking with the Power, Miraj mentions ‘using the sul’dam’, with no mention of the damane who are actually doing all the work. Meanwhile, when people from the main continent speak of them, they refer to the damane attacking, rather than the sul’dam.
-Seriously, Rand. Whyyyy would you use Callandor when you know how weird and unreliable the Power is? :indifferent: :indifferent: You already know it’s flawed! And even if it weren’t, it’s an incredibly strong sa’angreal. Do not use it when even drawing regular amounts of saidin is problematic. There’s no excuse.

Chapter 25:
-Elaida thinks of fulfilling Cemaile’s dream, a weak Amyrlin that Siuan always warns Egwene not to be like.
-Velina, a White Aes Sedai refuses to believe that damane actually exist. Shevan, a Brown, is more reluctant to state something unequivocal like that. She brings up the excellent point that just recently there were a lot of things that Aes Sedai accepted for fact that aren’t true. She says that maybe next someone will learn to make ter’angreal! But clearly that’s just silly. :p
-Elaida believes that, if no one’s been able to do it for three thousand years, no one ever will.
-Velina flinches when Alviarin blocks the Sitters’ way, subtly revealing her Black Ajah loyalties. She knows who Alviarin is.
-Elaida Foretold that “The Black Tower would be rent in fire and blood, and sisters would walk its grounds”. As usual, Foretelling get misinterpreted. She also remembers her other Foretelling referring to ‘her’ specifically, rather than just ‘the Amyrlin.”
-Alviarin is trying to create chaos in the Tower
-Alviarin writes in her letter about ‘inevitable triumph’ in the Last Battle. Elaida reflexively adds ‘of the Light’ to it, though Alviarin never said that herself. :shifty
-Alviarin learns a bit about Mesaana and resolves to be on the lookout for her after catching a glimpse of her hem.

Chapter 26:
-The Black Ajah hunters almost kill Zerah by telling her to admit a lie she hasn’t told. And Pevara actually considers letting her die because she’s a rebel.
-Toveine still thinks the pogrom was necessary and doesn’t believe the Black Ajah was involved.
-Until the end, Toveine refuses to believe that there are a lot of men who can channel at the Black Tower.
-It’s interesting how gestures can become necessary for channeling. When the Asha’man learned how to make Warder-like bonds, it was with their wives and they did it by kissing… and so now they don’t know how to do it without kissing. Though it seems what Logain did to Toveine is more than just a Warder bond (we knew there were some differences in the bond). Toveine finds that she doesn’t want to try to escape anymore, which doesn’t sound like it’s part of the normal Aes Sedai-Warder bond.

Chapter 27:
-Dobraine’s started calling Min “My Lady Ta’veren” :giggle
-Rafela gets pissed at Rand for getting pissed at her… probably more openly angry than she would be otherwise since Rand’s ta’veren. :p Rand is shocked, but takes it surprisingly well and actually says he’s happy with what they’ve done. He really should have stayed for the deal if he wanted it to be a good one…
-Rock Paper Scissors (Knife Paper Stone) exists in Wot. :giggle
-Seriously, does anyone know what happened with Narishma and Callandor? Why were there traps other than what Rand set? :scratch :scratch
-Cadsuane terrifies Lews Therin.

Chapter 28:
-Adeleas. :’( This part makes me so sad. Poor Vandene.
-They now know there’s a Darkfriend among them, and someone Adeleas would have trusted.
-Jaichim Carridin is tortured and killed by Shiaine. Hanlon doesn’t know who Carridin is.

Chapter 29:
-Min sees that the Wise Ones with Sorilea and the Aes Sedai prisoners will all serve Rand in their fashion. Very lucky viewing there, Min! It really helped that she had that viewing then.
-The Ajahs are sometimes represented in a weirdly divided manner. It gets better slowly as the books progress, but it’s still interesting. For example, when the Aes Sedai swear oaths to Rand: “Nesune delivered the words as though examining each one, Sarene as if stating a principle of logic.”
-Rand finds Ailil and Shalon together.
-The crown and scepter survived the destruction of the palace in Cairhien even though the rest of the throne room was destroyed, along with the throne they were sitting on.
-Poor Fedwin :’(
-Taim explains the actions of Gedwyn, Rochaid, Torval and Kisman as them being upset over what happened in Altara. He doesn’t mention Dashiva.

Chapter 30:
-Aram is excited to meet with the Prophet. Not surprising, but Perrin is understandably worried…
-And Faile is captured… so begins the longest most useless part of Perrin’s storyline. :facepalm

The main bummer for me with TPoD is that there is no Mat in the book. The Seanchan and Tylin tied him down  in Ebou Dar.

I'm actually progressing through it!

Ugh, I hate Perrin's chapters. I hateeeeee reading characters who constantly confused by everything around them.

Yeah, the left/right hand strays (Perrin) and the right/left hand stays (Mat). Perrin's arch takes a turn for the better, eventually :) , book 13 if I remember correctly.

Meh. Perrin is/always has been my least favorite main character, no matter the book. Even in the last few I just don't like his chapters like I enjoy everyone elses.

Same here; Mat's chapters are more fun to read for me. I guess you could say that Perrin moved from terrible in the Malden arch to average afterwards. But he does have some awesome moments in AMoL.

I'm up to Ch. 21 now! I'm hoping I can finish it today or tomorrow. The Companion has been really helpful for keeping track of all the Aes Sedai, Kin, Windfinders, etc.

One thing that stood out to me was in Ch. 14, Message from the M'Hael, Taim tells Rand he "harvested that blackberry bush myself" and Rand avoids thinking about it. What is Taim talking about?

Also! What the hell did the red rod ter'angreal make Elayne do in Ch. 20?! Do we ever find out? I can't remember.

Taim harvested channelers from the Two Rivers, a couple dozen if I remember correctly. They ended up playing an important role later on.

As to the rod ter'angreal, nothing "canon;" but my hunch is that Elayne walked around the inn in her shift or even minus the shift. She felt "heat" before blanking out (memory loss). I'm not gonna run my imagination further and speculate on other kinds of "heat."

Yeah, the "blackberry bush" is the Two Rivers.. I imagine the idea came to Rand when he heard that so many female channelers were found...

And no, we never get to hear exactly what Elayne did, but I think Birgitte once mentioned something about dancing on the tables :look:

I finished it!

As usual, Rand makes me super annoyed with his "women can't get hurttt!!!1!! D:" thing. Jesus, Rand, let them decide for themselves.

I know this is a bit off topic, and I apologize.. I was just wondering if there were links available to the reread threads for the earlier books? I'm weird and like to reread discussions like that as I'm rereading even if there's no discussion going on anymore

Or should I just go digging through old threads? I couldn't find anything earlier than book... 4? Maybe? And as a new member, I'm not sure when you all started the epic reread, so I don't know how far back to look. Thanks!
