Did a search but couldn't see a thread for this series.

Anyone else getting Calamity in the next few days (released today in canada I believe and 18th in UK)?

I have spent the entire day waiting in a hospital, and thus I have finished Calamity already :pleased-1:

And yes, another great series, where Sanderson gets to show his great writing abilities (all those awful metaphors :rofl)

I pre-ordered it and am going to be reading it ASAP! Unless I convince myself to re-read Firefight first...I should have thought of that last week. :look:

60% through and loving it so far. I hope the ending isn't rushed as it doesn't feel there's enough left in the book to handle everything thats going on.

I burned through it yesterday. It was sooooo good! The ending did feel a wee bit rushed to me, but only because...

...the dimensional things didn't really start to get explored until midway through the book. After three novels, it felt like adding a whole new game-changing aspect to the story at this stage was just too late to fully explore it.

Also, Obliteration really started to remind me of Trelane from "The Squire of Gothos" Star Trek episode, or maybe Q's kid from the Peter David books.

I dont know about the dimensional thing although not quite in as much detail as previous books the idea was there so expanding it now they had a 'cure' for the darkness seemed ok. I do think it centered too much on prof and not enough on the whole calamity thing though, and we never found out about Knighthawks wife!

I liked the ending slightly rushed as it seemed.

I think I just didn't expect them to go into it quite so much as they did. I love that they did! It just took me by surprise since I thought they'd already done as much as they were going to with it.

*awkward spoiler-avoiding sentences*

I'm not too surprised about this. The ending of "Calamity" certainly seemed like an opportunity Sanderson was using to hint at a much larger world. And frankly I still think he'll end up at least tangentially connecting this universe to the Cosmere at some point. The way Calamity bestowed his powers that "science can't even explain sometimes" just smacks way too much of Sanderson's whole magical system of Investiture. But maybe that's just me. :p

I actually just read Steelheart last week. It wasn't like a lot of the Sanderson things I've read before, but I really enjoyed it. Going to try to get my brother to read it as well. Heavy weaponry and motorcycle chases are more his style. I'm going to try to get Firedight this week. I got Steelheart in paperback though, and I really prefer to have all books of the same series in the same style. I might end up reading Calamity from the library while waiting to get it in paperback.

Just finished Calamity last week! It sat on my digital shelf for a bit. :look:

I'm not really happy with the ending. I listened to it twice, trying to catch everything. Instead of closing one or two plot threads, we get a flying lesson with alternate universe Dad? :grumble I know it's YA lit, but seriously. :grumble

I approve in principle of not tying everything up with a bow, leaving the world as something actually alive that sees change even when we aren't reading about it. This really just felt rushed to the finish line, though. What happened to Nighthawk's wife? Izzy got powers... what powers? how? Does that mean people will keep getting them? I'm ok with Prof's ending... tortured but coping. What about the famine??? What about counseling for all the Epics who now have PTSD?

I liked that it wasnt a perfect ending and it was left open. Made me think there could be more.

His same world different story series he's writing might offer up some answers you never know.
