Why is tower chat still IRC?

Why do we still have the main chat in IRC and not Telegram, Whatsapp, or Slack? (or something else more mobile friendly).

I have suggested to the tech people that we switch to Discord. The Green Ajah uses it for their private chat now, and it's fab. :pleased-1: I would LOVE to switch away from IRC, to be honest, but I know that's a big change that takes time and discussion.

I would be there more often if it were mobile friendly. So definitely I support that idea too!

If we do switch, I want something that can still be used exclusively on the computer. Whatsapp, for example, ties into the wifi of your phone whether you're using the computer or not.

Jeryn Gaidin put me on the the app IRCCloud that is mobile friendly on...both types of phones (sorry I don't know a lot about these distinguishments). Anywho, it's pretty breezy so far and it was just a couple minutes setup--autologs me in to all the rooms when I connect and I don't have to type out the entirety of other chatters' names--after a few letters a box comes up and I can just select that.

I'm down with whatever is best for the community regardless, just wanted to mention this because it was news to me but I guess these things have been out there for a while. You don't know until you know...you know? :P

*warms hands at bonfire and shamelessly plugs Mewl's Friday night chat bonfire* :)

Discord has browser access as well as a free (and ad free) desktop app for Mac, PC, Linux, iOS, and Droid. It remembers who you are from device to device, which I find useful, but you do not have to have the mobile device in order to use the service.

I like Telegram, it can be used on computers. Also you can create an easy link from the webpage, like this club has done. It's also on Android, iOs and Windows phone.

Discord is a fabulous tool, though it can grow quite a bit with all the chatrooms. It would need a strong set of moderators for, but still worth it. Downside, less random people popping in which can lead to fewer member joins.

Would there by a reason we could not do both? I would love to have a mobile version and IRC for when I was on an actual computer. I personally think more communication the better.

I love Discord, and I use it on a daily basis, but it never occurred to me to actually get the Yellows onto it. We use WhatsApp. Hmmmmmmmmmm. :shifty

I rather adore Discord, and am on there all the time for my WoW guild and people I play League with. :pleased-1:

I don't want to chat via mobile.
IRC is known by years, so I like to keep it.

I don't know about these other things like telegram. Isn't that something like whats app? :look:

Most of the apps mentions can be used on the computer. Discord particularly is accessible in every possible way a person could prefer to chat. :P

I too use Discord on a daily basis but IRC is forever. IRC is love and life dammit. :indifferent:

I think the concern with having both is that we would end up with fewer users in each one, which leads to less communication/discussion.

I would love to switch to something phone-compatible. There are some days when I just want to chat from my couch, not my desk.

I use androirc on my phone, colloquay on my ipad, mirc on my computer. There are web apps that allow you to use mobile as well. *Shrug*
Plus I'm on IRC all the time already for other things, so to me it's just one more server open :)

My issue with WhatsApp is that you have to give your phone # out, so right there that's out for me - plus the fact that it's not available on ipads or other non-cellular devices (unless that's changed recently).

Slack is fine, I use that currently... I don't believe anything is "public" that you don't want to be. It is a 24/7 type connection though...and already kills my battery which some may not like. It does have PC apps/etc available which is awesome. It also has voice chat and can share images easily. There also are ways to get slack and IRC to communicate together so that they are mirrored :look:

Discord I've never used so I can't really say anything on it :)

Just my thoughts.
