I have a theory I wanted to share with you guys, bare with me here.
We know that time in Randland is circular, repeating time and again. We know that each turning, a bore is drilled outside the wheel into the DO's "prison," and all hell breaks loose.
However, we also know that the DO experiences time as a linear thing. It is mentioned several times during the series that he remembers all his previous battles with the Dragon, that he believes he'll win one day, etc.
So my theory is this - the DO isn't sealed at all. The DO, in fact, was the winner between the DO and the Creator fighting, and destroyed the world. Those who are sealed are, in fact, the people of Randland, sheltered away in their own little world, probably by the creator, outside of time and space. The DO destroyed all of creation in the linear time and space universe, which is why Rand sees only darkness when he steps out of the pattern and into the DO's home.
I have several more lines of thought like this one (for example, the DO isn't even the bad guy here, he was just defending his home from invading creationists who wanted to create things in his perfect emptiness :P ), but the brunt of the theory is basically the time issue.
