I kind of hope WoT *isn't* made into a TV show. I love these books and the risk of it being done badly (not including this 'pilot' which was a technical rights-loophole rather than a serious production) is so high...

Film/TV rights can be extremely complicated. It's not unheard of for no one to really know who has rights and for several groups to think they do.
From what various people have said, and from the fact that it was a poor quality rushed production put on TV on one channel in probably the cheapest possible time, it looks like the people who made it at least thought they had the rights, but if they hadn't produced and aired a pilot by a particular day, they would lose those rights, so spent a couple of hours writing something, a few hundred dollars on sets and costumes and paid a few people to produce it

I would prefer a TV show to a movie, because TV shows can cover more detail. Also, 10-15 seasons are much likelier to appear than 10-15 movies.

True, I agree on Movie vs TV that TV would be better, but I meant more that I'd prefer that it was never put on screen at all (in either format)

She outright stated that the contract for TV rights was between Universal and Bandersnatch (Harriet's group), so it wasn't an implication.

That said, I hope things get cleared up soon. I don't think they should be suing her before it's absolutely clear who actually had the rights.

Bandersnatch has an existing contract with Universal Pictures that grants television rights to them until this Wednesday, February 11 – at which point these rights revert to Bandersnatch.I see no mention of Universal in the “pilot”. Nor, I repeat, was Bandersnatch, or Robert Jordan’s estate, informed of this in any way.

Which does not outright say that RE did not have the rights, though it is close enough that if they do, they might have a case. Not that that would make it wise for them to take this action

I guess I took the statement "Bandersnatch as an existing contract with Universal" as outright saying the rights were with someone else, and not with REE. Sorry if I misunderstood.

Either way, I agree with you that it wasn't a wise decision to file this suit. The vast majority of fans (I've seen one or two have a differing opinion) are expressing anger and outrage over this.

I like how Red Eagle said that Harriet's statement turned fans against them. Hate to tell them this, but most WoT fans I know were already strongly displeased with them. And, frankly, that pilot probably finished turning the rest

One of my friends is fully convinced that this pilot stunt was in the hopes that REE would get a statement like this out of the estate in order to file a lawsuit. Given their financial issues revolving around taxed/debt, it wouldn't surprise me in the least. Regardless, they've probably completely alienated 99% of the fanbase at this point, so any future ventures seem doomed to fail.

For a company who was supposed to be made up of a bunch of fans, they sure don't act like it.
