Winter's Heart, Ideas of Importance:
"When I cast the stars and give our position correctly, I am punished for being slow even when I have the answer as fast as Windfinder Ehvon! When I taste the sea and name the coast we are approaching, I am punished because the taste I name is not quite what Windfinder Ehvon tastes! I shielded you twice, but tonight I will hang by my ankles for not doing so sooner! I am punished for flaws ignored in others, for flaws I never make, because I might! Was your novice training any harder than that, Nynaeve?" (To Nynaeve)

Ah. I think RJ mentioned somewhere that her disappearance with Merilille is a question we're not gonna got an answer to, so I don't think that has anything to do with the 13x13 turning.

WoT feels almost like historic fact to me. It feels like we should be able to get answers to our questions. Like the answers are out there somewhere and all we have to do is find them.

[spoiler:pej8gmdo]Q: Please tell me all you can about the potential novella that fills in holes? What holes? Who? Where will it be published if written? Is this material that you really wanted to include in Towers of Midnight or The Gathering Storm but just couldn’t fit in? How does this match up with your feeling about not writing other stuff in the WOT world?
A: There are about 50,000 words of secondary plots that Sanderson wants to include in Towers of Midnight. He’s just not sure all of it will get into the book. If something gets cut, he’d like to get to his fans on his website.
...

My impression is that the novella, will actually be a series of prologue-like scenes that just don’t make it into the final book.

This also lead to lots of discussion on the Encyclopedia. It will include lots of spoilery stuff that doesn’t make it into the books. But, there are several examples in the notes where RJ specifically says that certain plots will not be revealed. Someone asked about Meiriel – the Aes Sedai in Caemlyn who ran away with a Sea Folk apprentice (Talaan). It was implied that this may be a thread that goes unresolved.[/spoiler:pej8gmdo]

"Implied that this may" is NOT a definitive "not going to happen". I'm evidently not the only one curious about this plot point resolution. Since RJ last referenced Talaan's disappearance in KoD, chapter 22, To Make an Anchor Weep, I can only be hopeful that he planned to continue/resolve this storyline in the main series, as I don't see it being terribly sufficient on its own for an Outrigger. Or I can be majorly annoyed for much, much longer...

In my opinion, it's the perfect thread to leave unresolved. It doesn't carry much relevance for the greater plot, it doesn't include any major characters and it's something that'll keep some fans guessing forever.

It's not likely to give her much power. It would pretty much suck for landear to survive the last battle however it turns out

Well there's my something knew to learn for today.

So Beidomon can't take the heat he was getting from the people and offs himself. Interesting

Oh and on timelines on the collapse.

Ishar Morrad Chuain goes over to the dark about 30 years after the drilling of the bore.

And LTT marries Ilyena about 50 years after the drilling, at which point Mieren joins the dark too.

So there is about twenty years for Aginor to work on shadowspawn before Lanfear joins, which is not insignificant by a long shot.

And then its another 50 years before the actual war of power begins.

So yes, its not impossible. They certainly joined in the right order, and Aginor has a decent length of time.

The only person to join before Aginor is Kamarile Maradim Nindar (Graendel), we should look at quotes by her referring to Lanfear, because she would have been the only one of the current forsaken in on the plan at the time if it indeed happened.

However we have to remember that it was Semirage who discovered that channelling through the 13x13 method. So the theory may still be impossible depending on when she turned.

Ah that's true, I'd forgotten about that.

I keep forgetting to go through the BWB given its usual uselessness, but this is a good tidbit

From the BWB
Prominent prisoners were always handed over to her to be bent to the Shadow. It was Semirhage who discovered that a circle of thirteen, using thirteen Myrddraal as a sort of filter, could turn anyone who could channel to the Shadow, though she invariably preferred to handle Aes Sedai herself. She hated everyone who called themselves Aes Sedai, and took the greatest pleasure in personally breaking them, by slow increments so they could be fully aware of what was happening to the last.

That's very interesting as Nemene Damendar Boann was one of the early ones to go over, definitely amongst the very first to go to Shayol Ghul. So probably went over before Lanfear.

Lanfear gave him a teacher & sent Shadowspawn to Tear to help him. She drilled the bore & is the only 1 we know who might help Rand with fixing the mess she helped create. I'm unsure if RJ read Harry Potter but I don't see Snape storyline here. I see a foreshadowing pattern of her helping Rand. Ingtar's role was pivotal, yet almost forgettable. Verin never turned back to the Light. I like Miya's theory too...that is, if Axis Gaidin doesn't trout us on it. :p

The "Snape storyline" is being played out with Taim. Just my two cents but something I've seen coming for a couple of books now. I've said it before and I will again: Taim has one PoV coming and it will stand everything most people think on its head. And then he'll die in some spectacular manner.

I thought that it was said somewhere that Talaan din Gelyn and the AS had been killed, Im pretty sure that the DO didnt want another FS level channeler running around on team light, else the forsaken are outnumbered in both strong male and strong female channelers (Assuming that Taim isnt going to swap sides). This is of course before you throw in all the angreal and sa'angreal that the light side has been hoarding.

Back on topic
What we know about Mierin from the AoL:
She loved LTT, but was only using his image to increase her own power and standing.
She was respected by her collegues, but not world renowned.
When she did turn to the shadow, she choose her own name and then started killing and torturing people in their dreams.
She also commited the most atrocities of all the forsaken, but never held a field command.
She preyed on the people who she captured, torturing them in their sleep and causing higher suicide rates than any of the other forsaken's territories.
She organised riots and won several battles for the DO in this manner.
Thus it can be understood that her primary motivation during the AOL was to increase her power and standing, first through LTT, and when that failed, through fear.

Back to the end of the third age, and she has that power she sought, stories of her have passed down over three millenia, yet suddenly she stops all her normal operations, no night-time assassinations, no huge riots amongst disgruntled populaces, and the only 'normal' behaviour she exhibits is some mention that she has been organising the DF's for the last few books on Elan's orders.

In fact to give a complete comparison:
Meirin's timetable
Books 2-3: Spend time flirting with Rand
Book 4: Give Rand an Asmodean as a present
Book 5: Spy on Rand, accuse him of cheating, then get imprisonned
Books 8-12: Obey Moridin
Book 13: Start annoying Rand again

All in all, not very compatible with the actions of past Lanfear, the only real connection is her reaction to the access keys of the Chodean'Kal.

it'd be interesting if someone laid some heavy complusion on her or something, or that her being within the group that was responsible for the bore and her direct exposure to the dark one, which i believe was said has driven people insane was responsible for her defection to the shadow. i think you could have two good story arcs out of this. shes bad or shes good, and trapped
