I'm Jocasta, and I hate making introduction threads, I always feel super awkward.

I'm in my 30s IRL, married with a 16 month old son. I'm a big fantasy reader, but somehow the Wheel of Time missed me until fairly recently. My husband bought me a copy of The Eye of the World for Christmas one year, and I loved it enough that I bought a copy for my brother for Christmas the next year, and well... roped him in as well. I'm one of those people who has to start the whole series over every time I pause for too long because I forget things, so I've read the first 4-5 books three times, but I'm only just finishing Lord of Chaos for the first time! I'm currently on an audiobook kick, so I'm going through them with my brother in audio form. Other authors I like are Lois McMaster Bujold and Scott Lynch.

I'm also a tabletop gamer, a video gamer, and a general nerd. Lately we watch a lot of My Little Pony (what can I say, my son loves it!?)

I found the site through the amazing library, and I'm hoping the community is just as good. It's been a long time since I was in a forum-based community, but I miss it a lot. I hope I feel at home here soon!

Hey Jocasta! Nice to have you here. :D

I agree that intro threads are super-awkward, but I'm glad we have them.

What kind of tabletop games do you like? I am a very avid board game fanatic. :look: I spend way too much money on them.

Welcome! Fellow audiobook and board game nerd here. :welcome I look forward to getting to know you! I'll second Jeffan's question - what are your favorite board games?

We like all the complicated board games -- and spend too much money on them! One of my favorites is the Civilization board game. We've also been playing a lot of Betrayal at the House on the Hill lately. And we play tabletop RPGs, I'm in two D&D 5th edition campaigns, 1 3.5 edition campaign, and 1 TMNT Mutants in Avalon game right now! Some of them play more often than others, but they're all a lot of fun.

My roommates put together a D&D group with a couple of their friends, and they're including me as well. We start planning it tonight. :D

Welcome, Jocasta! :D I am just getting acquainted with Lois McMaster Bujold, and I'm really enjoying the books I've read so far. It's lovely to hear you found us from our Library! :pleased-1:

I generally prefer Eurogames over American-style board games that fall in the middle to high-strategy categories. I love 7 Wonders, Tokaido, Takenoko, Kingdomino & Queendomino, Carcasonne, Wingspan, Scythe, Cthulhu Wars, and... well, a lot of others.

Yaaasss! We are D&D people as well. Between my husband and my 17 year old son and me, we play in a total of 6 D&D games. :D

I really enjoy Betrayal at House on the Hill because of how it changes every time you play it. I haven't tired Civilization yet. I love Abyss, and Lords of Waterdeep. And I'm really behind here but I finally played Ticket to Ride last weekend and quite enjoyed it!

If you ever decide to venture out to any of our RL gatherings (there are two official events each year and lots of unofficial local gatherings) you'll find that board games are a big part of our community's social time. :P

I like Carcasonne a lot, but I'm glad you spelled it first... That's the only one on your list I recognize though. We don't play it as much as we used to because my husband is tired of losing!

I think I'm too used to Facebook, I want to "thumbs up" all your replies.

Leala, I'm interested to hear how your game goes! And Elia are you reading Bujold's fantasy or her sci fi? Her Vorkosigan books are really special to me.

Hi Jocasta!

Welcome to TarValon! :clap
We're a fun bunch here. I like Carsasonne a lot myself but I'm terrible at it. I do love the Alhambra board game.

This is me and @Eren al'Velle (my partner) quite a bit of the time. If he starts winning games multiple times in a row I'm just kind of done with it for a little while. But we have so many games that it's not too bad.

Welcome, Jocasta! :)

This thread makes me want to go play Clue. I haven't really delved into the more complex games that have come out over the years, but that's more due to a lack of local group than anything else.

Clue is great. I always like Professor Plum.

*swoops in at the mention of Lois McMaster Bujold* Hi. :D Bujold's my all-time favourite author, and Vorkosigan my fave series. I love her fantasy as well, though, The Curse of Chalion tops my list of novels that are stand-alone or can be read that way.

Welcome to Tar Valon!

You have excellent taste. The Curse of Chalion is my favorite of her fantasy novels too!

Light, I have no clue what I want to freak out about first, so I guess I can just cover everything by saying that you are absolutely awesome - and if you had any doubts about fitting in, I hope they're already dispelled.

I love most of what you've mentioned! I'm not super experienced with board games, and I sort of prefer to observe rather than participate at first... That said, I love Munchkin and Funemployed, and I did play the Civilization board game, which by the way takes forever to set up. Literally, set aside an hour before you intend to play the game. It's great, though.

Just as a bit of a "just in case", if you have any questions, the Membership Manual in the Library is at your disposal, as are the stickied threads in the forums, and of course, us. :pleased-1: Oh, just you wait till you get your 25 posts and become a Citizen. Threads galore! \o/
