This is going up a bit later than I originally intended, but it's time to hire moderators for the first half of 2016! Many thanks to all those who have served as moderators for our fora for the past six months. You’ve been hugely helpful in maintaining these boards as a healthy community.

For those considering applying, these positions all have an application deadline of January 5th, 2016 and will start their term around January 8th, 2016. All of these positions will be 6 month terms, and if you find that you're really enjoying your job, you'll need to reapply each time the jobs become available. With all of these positions I do ask that you do your best to stay for the entire term for consistency, though I know that unexpected things happen. Each moderator is a staff member in the Department of Moderators and will report to the Director of Moderators.

When it comes to writing applications for any of these positions, long ones are not necessary. It would be useful to us to add things that help us get a feel for how often you are online, your usual availability, as well as a brief bit on your experience in the Community and why you would like to serve as a forum moderator. If you are online at a regular day and time, please provide that information. Also, if you're wanting to apply for multiple forums, feel free to simply put "APPLICATION - DEPT OF MODERATORS - YOURNAME HERE" and just indicate which specific ones you're interested in in the body of the application.

Because of the structure of the Discussion Halls, pay close attention to what each group of moderators will be in charge of! Most positions will be watching out for more than one forum. Also, there are some common requirements and duties for any moderator that I'll put here at the top, then if there is something specific we're looking for I'll add that to the section about a particular forum.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL FORUM MODERATORS:
  • Must have the time to actively read the threads,
  • May be any rank, so long as you've been a member of the community for at least 3 months, and
  • Have knowledge of or a willingness to learn vBulletin moderation actions.
Duties
  • Reading all the threads and keeping an eye on them,
  • Archiving threads as necessary,
  • Pruning the forums as necessary, and
  • Alerting the Director should an issue arise, and working with the Director (and whoever else in the Administration needs to get involved, usually the Keeper or Director of Membership) to resolve any issues.

Here are more details on specific requirements for each forum and how to apply:

General Forum and Frivolous Fun
As a moderator for General, you will be responsible for keeping an eye on the threads and making sure that people aren't getting out of line/fighting/flaming, etc. While this forum does not usually require a lot of action from its moderators, it does require a bit more time as it is one of our more active forums. In addition, these moderators will keep an eye on the Frivolous Fun forum, which while busy tends to be very low key in terms of moderation.

I am looking for up to 3 moderators for this forum. If you would like to apply and meet the requirements, please send your application to moderators@tarvalon.net and keeper@tarvalon.net by January 5, 2016 with the subject line "APPLICATION - GENERAL MODERATOR - YOURNAMEHERE".

Current Events
As a moderator of Current Events, you need to employ tact and diplomacy in your dealings with other members, you need to remain fair and approach all moderator dealings with as little bias as possible, and you need to commit to at least 15 hours a week dealing with moderating Current Events. This is our most time-consuming moderator position and will likely require working more closely with me than others. We have two rotations now in Current Events; both are 6 month terms but one rotates with all the rest of the moderators (now) and the other two positions rotate 3 months later.

Requirements
  • Membership in the CE usergroup is mandatory for this particular position.
If you are interested, please email moderators@tarvalon.net and keeper@tarvalon.net by January 5, 2016 with the subject line "APPLICATION - CE MOD - YOURNAMEHERE".

Discussion Halls
As a moderator in the Discussion Halls area, it is very important that you read all threads and check out all links that are posted (especially in the Entertainment forum). As with all the other forums, you'll also make sure that people aren't getting out of line, fighting, flaming and so on. I have split the forums in half, so please indicate in your application if you would like to moderate group:
(A) Gaming, Tech Talk, Fine Arts and Literary Pursuits, and Hand Crafts
(B) Education and Employment, Home and Health, Entertainment, and Sports Fanatics

I'm looking for 2 moderators for each group of Discussion Halls forums. If you are interested, please email moderators@tarvalon.net and keeper@tarvalon.net by January 5, 2016 with the subject; "APPLICATION - DISCUSSION HALLS (A) - YOURNAMEHERE" or "APPLICATION - DISCUSSION HALLS (B) - YOURNAMEHERE". It is a plus for this position if you are relatively active in the forums for your group.

Olde Warder and Hen
As a moderator for The Olde Warder and Hen, you will be responsible for keeping an eye on the threads and making sure that people aren't getting out of line/fighting/flaming, etc. While this forum doesn't usually require a lot of action from its moderators, it does require a bit more time to read as it is a relatively active forum.

I'm looking for 2 moderators for this forum. If you are interested, please email moderators@tarvalon.net and keeper@tarvalon.net by January 5, 2016 with the subject line "APPLICATION - OLDE WARDER AND HEN MODERATOR - YOURNAMEHERE".

Book Forums
As a moderator for the book discussion forums, you will be responsible for keeping an eye on the threads and making sure that people aren't getting out of line/fighting/flaming, etc. If you haven't yet read A Memory of Light, I would strongly suggest not applying unless you are ok with reading spoilers. In addition please note that these positions will be watching over *all* of the book discussion forums including non-WoT literature.

I am looking for 2 moderators for these forums. If you would like to apply and meet the requirements, please send your application to moderators@tarvalon.net, library@tarvalon.net and keeper@tarvalon.net by January 5, 2016 with the subject line "APPLICATION - BOOK FORUM MODERATOR - YOURNAMEHERE".

If you have any questions, let me know! Thanks and good luck to all who apply!

Just a suggestion ......

Only in the Latin. It is decidedly uncommon and un-preferred in English. And it has been so for far longer than you have been alive.

:brown

Thus, I giggle at you: :giggle

But I would still apply to be a mod. :hug

Only because the English language borrows words and then rips them to shreds and poops on the shreds. :P It's a word borrowed from Latin, and the proper thing to do would be to also keep the Latin plural.

So wait, what's the English plural of museum? :indifferent:

Museums. :brown-blink: What else would it be?

Just because English words come from somewhere doesn't mean we're obligated to never treat them like English words. :P

Musea would be the correct Latin plural form. And you're right, you aren't obligated. It just weirds me out. :P

What's interesting is that your language does use the correct Latin plural form for datum. Except that you've practically forgotten that there's a singular form. :pleased-1:

I thought it was the same in singular and plural? One museum, two museum :look:

And I think this thread has gone slightly off track :p

The incorrect use of the word "data" as a singular noun was a pet peeve of my psychology advisor in college, in line with the APA style guide. And yet...
http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2010/jul/16/data-plural-singular

I'm actually astounded that "musea" is considered correct in English at all. :brown-blink: :brown-blink: I have seriously never heard (or seen) anyone say that.

We also use "media" as a singular noun, and most of us have forgotten that it's at all related to "medium" :look:

Somewhere I have the grammar "hints" sheet my Film & Media tutor made for our tutorial group in first year. The "media/medium" distinction was mentioned, which is what made me think of it. I believe he referenced Mystic Meg at that point (yes yes, I realise no-one outside the UK will know who she was :p). Anyway, he also had gems like "Few and little. You have little money and few people, not few money and little people. Unless you've got fairies at the bottom of the garden, sweetie."

I need to dig out that sheet :look:

At this point, I probably shouldn't mention the "made me thought of it" thing, eh? :look:
