Yay, the start of the TarValon Book Club is here! And we're starting with Catherine Asaro's Primary Inversion.

I may not start this one today (although I have bought it on the Kindle) but one of the other novels instead, as I hope to read a few of Asaro's books before seeing her at JCon this April so I'd like to read them a little closer and have them fresh.
Is anyone else planning on reading along?

This one is available on Audible.com so I plan to listen to it. I'd rather start around the time that someone else will be reading. :look Please post if/when you're planning to start and I'll pick up my copy then.

So I started today! :D I am somewhere in chapter 7. My thoughts thus far:

:blink What is with all the romance first Rex and then the Aristo Heir? I had to doublecheck that the genre wasn't Romance :facepalm

I'm planning to start it hopefully tonight. I'm doing the audiobook version so I should get through it pretty quickly.

Before I begin I have to admit that this isn't a book I would have picked up if not for this book club. I'm keeping an open mind, but there isn't anything about the summary that really grabbed my interest. Still, I have been known to be wrong before! (I though Harry Potter looked stupid when I read the blurb the first time. :look)

It also isn't something I would have picked up myself either. But so fr the Universe is rather intriguing to me. :)

I will be purchasing the ebook shortly and tossing it into the queue. Should be able to start it in a day or two.

I have to say that I'm really liking this book so far. I'm very surprised and very pleased. I'm not sure what chapter I'm in since I'm doing the audio version (I tend to gloss right over the chapter numbers when I listen ), but I just finished the part where
Soz and Jaebril (spelling?) meet and have their unexpected "mind meld".
I definitely want to see what happens next!

As I read I'm trying to keep in mind the theme of our book club this month. I'll try to post some thoughts on that specifically later on.

I'm just now starting chapter 5, and I can't decide if I like this book or find it too predictable.

I might read this one. Haven't decided for sure. I usually don't do hard SciFi. But sometimes I enjoy it (rarely but it happens), so it would be fun to read it and discuss with others.

I finished this a few weeks ago but RL got crazy (my Grandpa died, and everything that comes along with that) and analyzing books suddenly became much less important. :\

    My thoughts, with spoilers:
At first I enjoyed this book. I think it is because it is very different from anything I have read before. I enjoyed learning about the biomech technology that makes up Soz. I also enjoyed the scifi aspects of the book.

Then came the "romance" between Soz and Jaibriol. I didn't really like it. I liked her relationship with Rex much better - it was much more believable. Even her affair with the young musician made sense to me. I get that the thing with Jaibriol is supposed to be a mental connection of which neither person is in control, but I still didn't really "believe" it.

And in the end, to me, the story wasn't that original, nor was it compelling enough for me to want to read the next book. The topics of diversity and colonization and things like that were pretty black and white. I didn't find a lot here to make me think about things in a different way.

I'm not sorry I read it (or rather, listened to it) as it was generally enjoyable, but it isn't something I'd recommend highly or be interested in revisiting.

I felt the exact same way. I also had the "is this a Sci-Fi or a romance?" moment that Nyavene had. I'm not sure if it's some sort of strange hybrid of the two genres, or just written by someone who has read way too many romance novels.

I just started this morning, and I'm not even through chapter 1 yet, but so far I like the writing.

Re: Rhon relationship (PS I've read all the spoilers above.)

I'm starting to see the backstory and the layout for the mindmeld love affair that comes later. (I'm just after the part where Rex proposes.) I can see her building it as "this is an amazing thing! Rare, but amazing! She gave up looking years ago!" And so that's supposed to prepare us for the suddenness of the love and connection she has with this as yet for me future lover.

Yeah, but I understand the foreshadowing and the connection she experiences when that event finally happens but it still doesn't "feel" right to me ...

I finished this book at the end of January. I still remember the details pretty well but I haven't thought about it even once since I posted my last comment here. To me, that says a lot. :\

I just happened to notice it because of this thread and knowing what's to come. I don't know if it will play out or work.

I'm interested to see what you think about that relationship by the time you get to the end of the book Mother.

Ok. I finished the book on the flight to Anni.

    All the spoilers.
It didn't feel like a romance to me. It felt like a slice of life from someone who's recovering from PTSD and heartbreak, and being thrust into a bigger role in politics than she expected.

Was the relationship between her and Jaibriol believable? Not really. I did appreciate that she had some doubts to begin with, and was slow to warm up to the idea of him. The book felt so short, though, that I don't think Asaro really had time to develop Soz's full journey to accepting Jaibriol as lover/mindmeld person.

I actually do want to read the next book, and see if she focuses on politics or on the relationship. If it's the relationship, I won't care as much, but I think the politics part has potential to be interesting.
