Link from a BBC survey of the nation's favourite books. The nation being the UK, so there is a bias towards British books and an even stronger bias towards English language books
I bolded the ones I read
And italicised the ones I tried, but just could not get all the way through without my eyes falling out
Blue the ones I am reading
And underlined the ones I got for free on my Nook so intend to try eventually

The fact that I didn't grow up with the same books that an English speaking child would really shows here. Though I admit that I have glaring holes with the classics too.

36/100 Like Dieda, Pratchett saves me from total failure. I used italics with the books I've attempted but failed to finish.

And yes, I'm not from an English-speaking culture. In my list there would be more Russian, German, and French classics, plus a lot of Finnish ones. :p I'm super happy that there are some awesome translated books too, though; like the Perfume (I guess it made it's way here because of the film, but anyway, the book is brilliant!), and One hundred years of solitude. :D

I've read 62 of them myself, but I have to say, there are an absolutely depressing number of you who have never read Treasure Island! Bump it to the top of your reading list- it will take you hardly a day, and you won't regret it!

Provided you like pirates and a good adventure, anyway!

Treasure Island has some old fashioned language and the style is often similarly old fashioned, but it is still a pretty easy read. If you don't find yourself screaming "Jim you are an idiot" at the book when he meets LJ, then you are not the sort of person I can understand.
It's out of copyright, so free on Gutenberg, but may also be free on Kindle or Nook
Quite a few of them are "classics" that don't cost anything for an e-version

I also greatly enjoyed Kidnapped. Alan Breck is one of my favorite characters in anything, ever.

Interesting list but what age group is it aimed at? Jaqueline Wilson? My ten year old grandaughter reads her books. I'll happily read most young adult fiction but not primary school light reading, for goodness' sake. And Enid Blyton? *shudders*

The list was just people who responded to the survey. I assume they had a lot of teenagers/people just out of their teens/people just into them which would be why the Wilson did so well

    Good luck!
I tried the top 20 from the library, but some were so boring I really couldn't manage it

I'm probably going to read one more from this list, since I got The Great Gatsby (F. Scott Fitzgerald) as a christmas present. But some of the books in the list I don't intend to read at all. For example I'm not interested in Terry Pratchett, or this Jaqueline Wilson.

Also, I see this list is already 10 years old... It would be interesting to see what kind of changes there would be if there was a more recent survey, and what would a "worldwide" list look like. I guess some of the books were new when the list was being compiled, and lots of people mention the books they've read more recently, and might not even remember older ones even if they were better. (And now that I looked up the year for the survey I notice I was wrong, assuming the Perfume by Süskind was in the list because of the film. :p Which was released in 2006 - i.e. 3 years after the survey was made)

Ulysses by Joyce is usually considered a difficult one (it's a super many-layered book in styles and references). But it might be interesting in another way to you Kerna, since it happens in Dublin. I didn't find it too wearisome - some German classics, like the Tin Drum by Günther Grass were more slow and arduous for me to read.

Maybe we should do our own survey here :D Though it would probably be full of fantasy then. (would probably read like this one - http://www.npr.org/2011/08/11/139085843/your-picks-top-100-science-fiction-fantasy-books )

I think this is a good list as it does contain quite a few classics in addition to what would have been popular 10 years ago.

Terry Pratchett is good. I just can't read him in a series as I get tired of him, it's good that his books work as stand alones too. Mort is definitely one to read even if you don't check out his others!

And yeah I'm looking forward to reading Joyce.
