Again, I think your feelings speak well of you, Eniara, but I must respectfully disagree. Although I haven't been in contact with his family for some time, at one point I was close with all of them. Riley's wife did not work, or only worked minimally for low-wage, part-time jobs. I do know that she pressured him into buying things the family couldn't afford, such as an expensive pet horse, and vacations. I see no reason why she couldn't jobhunt for something to support herself and her family better. This is just conjecture on my part, but I doubt she will do that. She'll probably lean on extended family for financial support. Riley's children are in their teens, or in college. While it sucks to have a family member go to jail, it's not as if Riley would be leaving behind a young wife and wee bairns helpless. His family will manage.

I don't think being a parent should get you an eternal "get-out-of-jail-free" card.

Well, with that extra detail fair enough. I was under the impression that she didn't work, but I assumed it was just to care for their kids. And for some reason I also thought he still had very young children. So if his kids are mostly grown, and his wife is part of the problem (a horse? really? :x), then that absolutely influences my feelings on the matter. Thanks for the enlightenment.

:indifferent: All sympathy gone. I didn't have much left to begin with but it turns out I'm more of a book white than I thought. :indifferent:

Hammar Thank you for bringing humor to a humorless situation.

Given that a horse is an initial multi-thousand dollar investment, with an additional 600 dollars a month at minimum.... that helps put the scale into perspective a bit more. A horse costs more than pretty much any car, and more than some mortgage payments.

First and always, I cannot express how fully grateful I am to Hammar. His volunteering of his expertise and time, his engaging with the community, and his exceptional and careful counsel is invaluable. I'm particularly thankful for his ability and willingness to answer questions with honesty, levity and caution. And, personally, I'm very thankful for him explaining the sort of restrictions we follow under his recommendation.

I am sure I am able to say this.
I do not blame anyone by association. Not by who was brought here, mentored, befriended or bonded into this has made me worry. We are all responsible for our own actions. That's all anyone can ask.

Except Valo, who - by contract - is totally responsible for any of my actions you don't like.*

I have known Riley for going on 13 years. He was the 1st person to welcome me into Tarvalon's doors back in EZBoards (better known as EZBi*ch). Over the years me and Riley have gotten to know each other quite well. Talked a lot. Joked even more. Had a blast in mIRC. We really hit it off. I loved him as a brother. I remember the Great Chicago flood Anni. My 1st Anni. I was a bloody mouse. Quiet as hell barely talked. I remember after the party when we were at IHop for the farewell lunch he pulled me to the side and told me that everyone goes through that their 1st Anni the same way and that it is normal. But afterwards. It's like seeing family. And he was right. Next Anni (8 years later :p) I hugged everyone, 1st brother ceremony, and Riley, Ban, and I saved a friend's life.

When this happened I sat there for about 4 hours in shock. My only thought was w...t...f...

I loved Riley. Even now I still kinda do. But what he did was wrong. Really really wrong. I can forgive him for stealing the money. But I will never forgive him for almost breaking the Tower... For trying to shut down to what most of us call a 2nd home. For the betrayal of trust that was put in his hands. That isn't something I can forgive.

I hope Justice is served to Riley. I don't think what he did was a mistake. Like oops I forgot to take out the trash. He deliberately decided to go and steal 25k or more from his friends and family and tried to destroy this great community that's been a key building stone for WoT communities on the internet for years. I hope he gets what he deserves. I'm just sad that he didn't think to come to us in his time of need. :(

I'm not entirely sure it was a time of need.

I'm not entirely sure that he's not a better con man than all of Ocean's Eleven, and went ahead and planned this whole thing.

Well.. since you suggest Pip, i guess we indeed have to disband DM and move all it's members into MDD so they won't cause any more trouble.

This was probably an uncalled for attack on a perfectly innocent membership group, that I am going to choose to see as bringing some much needed levity to the whole situation. Thank you for the laugh Pip.

Stealing is wrong, but I am proud beyond words to say that even this couldn't come close to "almost breaking the Tower". It was a terrible moment in our history, but dammit, it was also a really awe inspiring moment when we as a community were tested and passed the test with amazing grace, generosity, and love. I can't really thank Riley for that (the whole stealing thing) but I can and will acknowledge it.

Hammar, thank you for your work on this and your update. It was timely and well appreciated.

IT's been how long? I still can't talk about Riley without swearing. Therefore, I can't talk about him.
