Are membership merits only awarded to those who've joined the Tower?

Originally, the rank of citizen was created on the one hand so that people could become members of TarValon.Net without the obligations of service and commitment to the community or the requirement that they the read the entire series and on the other hand to address the fact that there are people who create accounts, stay for a brief period of time, and ultimately move on. Later we found that we do have members who stick around but still don't want to join the Tower, and created the rank of Resident Citizen to make it clear that these are people who have been here for a long time and would be a great resource for newcomers. A suggestion was made that these individuals be added to the Who's Who to reflect any merits they have earned as well as showing other items on their profile such as events they have attended, tower relationships, etc. and we thought it was a great idea! Because there is still no obligation to the rank of Resident Citizen we won't create these profiles automatically, but if anyone who has been here for 6 months or more would like to have a page created for them in our library, simply notify the Mayor and she will ensure that it gets completed.


Since you're a Resident Citizen, notify the mayor@tarvalon.net to create your page & then notify merits@tarvalon.net to get your bling added to your shiny new page.

Nah, I just wondered, since I was mentioned in a list where it mentioned citizens with merits, but I didn't have any membership merits. Looking at those who had, it appeared to me that they had all been members of the Tower previously, so I wondered if that was a prerequisite.

Hrm...you should still qualify for Membership Merits, if I'm reading this correctly. It didn't really specify that you had to be a member of the Tower per se, just the community. Obviously the Senior Membership merits are Tower only, but if it was me, I'd email merits@tarvalon.net and ask if Resident Citizens qualified or not for the regular Membership Merits. And congrats on the merits you have already earned.

These two Merits are a little different from all the other merit badges, which are geared towards recognizing active service. Instead, this one recognizes that you have enjoyed our community so much that you have stayed around as a member for a long time, participating and enriching the experience of others. While the other Merits recognize those who have gone above and beyond in active service and, as such, recognize a small percentage of our membership, this merit recognizes those who liked us enough to stay and participate. Compared to the total number of current members, a fairly large percentage will have Golds. However, compared to the total number of people who have joined and left, the percentage is smaller.
The Silver Badge for Membership is for those who have been a member for at least two and a half (2.5) consecutive years (this means that if you joined and left the site completely after a year, you wouldn't get this; if you took a leave of absence and came back, you're fine). Once you hit five (5) consecutive years as a member, your Silver will upgrade to a Gold, which means that you will no longer have the Silver merit, but you will gain the Gold in its place. You will receive a Gold for every five (5) consecutive years as a member. As it talks about the site, rather than the Tower, the implication is that this is for any actual member, though it doesn't seem to be specfied
