ME TOO. I had to fight the urge everytime the storyline was following her not to just skip it because she just irritated the crap out of me.:trout I would be okay if she never followed them from the first book....

I am so glad I'm not the only one!! Ugh. I struggled through EVERY storyline with her in it. :balefire

Cadsuane, completely, but Elayne and Gawyn are also pretty bad.

Faile and Nynaeve. I'd love Perrin if it weren't for Faile, but as it is, he just kind of makes me go -_-;;;

Yes... Perrin on his own is a great character. Perrin running around after Faile is irritating as anything.

Actually, now that I've reflected a bit on my recent re-read... I find Min quite irritating :look: She has moments of being brilliant, but at the same time, she just... doesn't sit right with me. I'm not sure why exactly.

Faile. My dislike of Faile increased with each mention of her whining.

Nynaeve. Nynaeve for certain. That woman drives me insane! The only time I ever felt really bad for Uno was because of her. And she just makes everyone's lives miserable because she can't admit she isn't perfect. I just want to box her ears, as she would say.

Early on most of the female characters (except for the Aiel ones and Moiraine) drove me absolutely nuts. I felt like RJ just couldn't write a female character without making her whiny and manipulative. Over time it got a lot better though and I started liking most of them. The one constant hatred was Faile. Her progression went from rabid hate -> mild dislike by the end of the series.

Perrin went from meh -> dislike -> adore (by the middle of book 13 and onward)
Gawyn went from kinda cool -> rabid hate -> pure, 100%, complete and utter loathing.
Book 14 spoiler:
I straight up cheered when he died.

I think those were the ones I had the strongest negative feelings towards at any given time. There were definitely others that irked me from time to time, but the true hatred came from Faile and Gawyn, and the true annoyance came from Perrin.

I just think I love and hate every character (on the light side that is). Eveyone has a star moment (or plenty) but also everyones give me a *have to chew my legs* feeling.

But I absolute hate Fain the peddler. I think he is just creepy. And I hate Liandrin the evil white...er...black. And I dislike Elaida the red amyrlin...

So, it seems like most people are at least annoyed by Faile -- does she have any unmitigated redeeming qualities that I've somehow missed? Someone's gotta like her somewhere... Right?

I actually like Faile. She reminds me of Toph from Avatar. She doesn't want to be coddled. And her love for Perrin is quite profound. One tough Saldaen cookie.

I like Faile. You have remember she is very young, has lived very sheltered life and only behaves like she is suppose to (culture-wise). And that do not match well with Perrin's culture & personality. We readers get Perrin's POV a lot and feel his pain when he cannot understand Faile. But don't get really Faile's POV at all, so we get only one side of the picture.

If Perrin's personality would have been slightly different (more relaxed and not so angsty) he would have probably just laughed at Faile's tricks and treats and soon she would have just stopped. But Perrin behaves just the opposite which makes Faile behaving even worse. And of course, as every person in WOT, they do not share their thoughts so everyone just makes their own (wrong) assumptions and behaves according to that (a major theme in wot).

But Faile as well as Perrin grows (from teen to adult) hard way and that is not easy reading.
Later in the AMOL when we get Faile's POV she has learnt that "tormenting" Perrin is only for the show (and I believe Perrin knows this at this time of the series).

We get quite a bit of Faile's POV well before AMOL. Mainly once they are on the hunt for the Prophet.

I also think that understanding why she acts like she does doesn't preclude us from disliking her behaviour. I mean, you could understand why a bully bullies (insecure, bullied themselves, bad homelife, etc) but still not approve of their bullying!

Perrin is, to all intents and purposes, a simple country lad when he meets Faile. He says what he means and means what he says. He doesn't understand this person who seems to lie as easily as she breathes. He's probably never met anyone like her. Faile, on the other hand, is supposed to be wordly (albeit that she isn't quite as wordly as she thinks :P) But she was brought up in a noble house, with the distinct possibility of becoming Queen. She is more educated, and really, should've been more aware that people outside of Saldaea probably don't know Saldean customs. But instead, she expects Perrin to read her mind, expects him to change for her without changing herself. She essentially behaves like a spoiled brat for almost the entire time we know her. She improves vastly when she is captured by the Shaido. I can't remember whether it happens in book 12 or 13 now, so I'll spoiler the next bit in case it's 13:

I liked how they played out the reconciliation after the rescue - the picnic etc. At that point, you can see how she has grown up. Same with her running the camp and realising all that her mother did for her.

But overall, if I met her, would I get on with her in person? Probably not. Her personality type is just unappealing to me.

(aarrg, I wrote a long post and then lost it... sucks. I try summarize :) )

I totally agree with you. Her actions are not acceptable. But it is very human thing not to accept our loved ones as they are. Faile just cannot believe Perrin is so honest and direct (and not manipulative) so she tries to reveal those traits out of him. (even Perrin is honest etc he actually never tells Faile why he is doing some thing like he does (don't have actual reference here)). Faile tries to change him to a man she is more familiar with (personalitywise), but as we all know you cannot change other people.

Hunt of the Prophet comes relatively late but we meet Faile relatively early (2nd book?), so whe have many books to form a bad opinion of her :) Few POV's later isn't enough to change our fixated mind....

I think we meet Faile in book 2, yes, when Perrin, Moiraine et al are chasing after Rand.

I was actually meaning that her PoV when they're looking for the Prophet (which is book 7 or 8?) actually makes her more annoying  My dislike of her doesn't lessen a whit when I know why she's acting like she is ;)

And I agree that Perrin isn't blameless, I can imagine that he is very frustrating. In fact, I know that having a husband like that is very frustrating, as my husband can be very Perrin-like

I think part of the issue is that Faile is the only Saldaean woman we really get to know well, and a lot of her behaviour simply stems from being a Saldaean I think. The whole nation is full of crazy people! I feel like Troll Level: Saldaea needs to become a thing.

Yeah, from our interaction with Faile, Deira and Tenobia, I think "crazy people" just about covers it :P
