Lol, thanks But I cannot find a match for Lini; maybe Cenn has an outside chance.
No. Just ... no.
No one is a match for Lini.
I always thought Basel Gill would end up with Lini, after they travelled together for so long I can just see him rushing about his inn, thoroughly harassed, as Lini keeps everything in absolute order
Do you think Gill still has an inn though? Caemlyn is pretty destroyed...
I assume he'll set up an inn somewhere It doesn't have to be in Caemlyn, though I can't imagine Elayne letting the city stay destroyed for longer than she can help it.
True; which is why I'm having so much trouble with it. I don't hate Dobraine enough to do that to him. But Cenn would learn some manners from Lini
Gill is too young for Lini I'm sure he'd rather marry his old cook than Lini.
I've read through quite a lot of posts and nobody seems to have mentioned Galad and Berelain. I quite like that relationship and the circumstances leading up to it (Faile saying she better find someone she can at least act as if she likes). I always liked Berelain and Galad is one of my favourite characters. When Annoura burns herself out creating the gateway to save Galad for Berelain my eyes teared up a bit. What do you guys think of their relationship?
Whoever gets Berelain is one lucky man! In addition to being a stunning beauty; she is capable, and has spirit! I love how the Wise Ones took her under their wing; and Sorilea was wondering if she could find a suitable husband among wetlanders "if such a man exists."
I think this relationship is great. And ironic that she started out with designs on the Dragon, and ended up with his brother
The Androl/Pevara relationship threw me for a loop!
I like both Pevara and Androl as characters and as a bonded pair (I'm not sure if its fair to call them Warder and Aes Sedai or Ashaman and Warder), but I can't see them as romantic.
Androl mistrusted Aes Sedai his whole life and Pevara is red ajah. It seemed more like the couple just got past the "I hate you" stage and went straight to the "I love you" part. I kinda expected more steps!
The only courtships that made some kind of sense were Rand-Aviendha, Mat-Tuon, and Siuan-Gareth. There might be others; but I don't remember them now.
Why did you like the Mat-Tuon one? It felt super out of character for him to me & I really disliked the coupling.
I agree on Rand-Aviendha & Siuan-Gareth, those were very organic & believable, but I really liked Morgase & Tallanvor too.
Morgase and Martyn was a good one too. I liked how that progressed. As to Mat and Tuon, I liked how they talked to each other. They got to know each other as reasonably as possible considering their circumstances. Like other couples, they were destined to get married; but they worked on it.
A problem with some other couples is that they don't talk to each other. And their love is just out of the blue: Elayne falling in love with Rand after wrapping his head with a bandage and then cut off for months (he was unconscious when she saw him after Falme). Egwene and Gawyn! I don't even know where to start on that. Nynaeve and Lan, the power of tracking and woodswomanship at the start was strange; but their relationship progressed normally after that strange attraction.
A bit late to the game but figured I would list my thoughts anyway. My thoughts also may be a bit spoilery, FYI.
Nynaeve/Lan: My favorite couple, hands down. Some posted they were surprised by why this occured. Some guys like low-maintence, practical outdoorsy girls who can take care of themselves. Plus, he's basically a borderlander and those cultures admire strength and self-sufficiency. **shrug** I don't have issues with how fast this relationship happened. And I don't believe Nynaeve wanted Lan simply because he was bonded to Moiraine. That would have been way out of character for Nynaeve. She may be stubborn, but she doesn't seem the type to want to spend time trying to break up another "relationship".
Siuan/Garath: Second favorite relationship. Simply put, I love the banter between these two. They seem like kindred souls having held positions of power and being cast down from them. They would have a lot to discuss because of that. I do not like the final result in AMoL, though. That is the only thing that seemed forced in their entire relationship.
Morgase/Tallanvor: Talk about dedication and loyalty to Morgase. I don't think her position of power would have allowed for this to happen. While I'm not glad she was manipulated by Rahvin and used by the Whitecloak commander, I am happy all that led her to Tallanvor. And yes, reading their courtship and refusing to be married after Perrin said he was going to force them to get it over with was very entertaining.
Androl/Pevera: Fourth favorite. I think they come to a mutual understanding that neither is what they first believed of each other. Groundbreaking worldview change, and I think this is why they paired so well together even after such a short time.
Egwene/Gawyn: Ugh... Gawyn needed to find someone who wanted the spotlight just as much as he did. He clearly didn't understand his responsibility of being a warder despite Egwene's many attempts to explain it to him.
Moiraine/Thom: This one was a complete surprise when I read it. However, I can now pick out events that foreshadowed this (hindsight is 20/20). I wish their scene and explanation of how this came about had been a bit longer, though.
Rand/Min: Out of the three girls, Min is the only one who spent any significant time with Rand. I can see this one happening and lasting.
Rand/Ahviendha: Another possibility I could see lasting because of their heritages and ability to banter.
Rand/Elayne: Gag me with a spork. Admittedly I never liked Elayne. She's too prissy and high maintenance, imho.
Rand in general? I agree with him. He is a pig not being able to decide. He's able to pick and choose depending on his mood or whichever he needs to manipulate into something political.
All in all, I think "love" is a strong word to be tossed around like it is. But this is a fantasy series after all.
Eta: I forgot Mat/Tuon.
I could take or leave this one. Mat is very comical and wears his heart on his sleeve. Tuon is very reserved. I guess my interest in their relationship was simply to see if they were ever going to complement each other and mellow the other one out.
Same goes for Galad and Berelain. She's motivated by power and he by extremist morals. They would have to mellow each other out for this to believably work.
Interesting take on the relationships, Polegnyn My opinion is that Nynaeve's relationship with Lan was the most detailed, long, and thorough of all relationships. It was just that the initial attraction started off rather unexpectedly. Nynaeve hated Moiraine, truly, for a few books. But the person who was Moiraine's accomplice did not receive any of Nynaeve's negative feelings. But women have been throwing themselves at Lan since he was a teenager; and Nynaeve would be another.
Of Rand's relationships, Aviendha seems the most detailed in development. And it was Rand's first real relationship. At this stage, I think Elayne was just a crush. 4 days do not a relationship make. Rand and Aviendha spent months together; sleeping in the same room/tent most of the time. But both had to deal with some trauma that obstructed their total acceptance of their love. Rand was traumatized by seeing a dead Aviendha at the start of the Caemlyn raid. Aviendha's toh towards Elayne (in her short-sighted, overproud way) needed to be resolved for her to accept her love.
I still believe Nynaeve was mad, first and foremost, at Moiraine for disrupting their quiet life in Edmond's Field, evading her questions regarding their travel (which Nynaeve is not use to anyone evading her questions), and Moiraine's possible attempt at using the boys in her "schemes". Even if she was the slightest bit jealous of Moiraine because of Lan, I can only imagine it being the smallest of reasons simply to add fuel to her hatred of Moiraine. Not the sole reason.
I agree with you regarding Rand/Avhiendha
And tell your avatar to stop glaring at me. It's intimidating
True, Nynaeve's hatred of Moiraine was born out of the her view that she failed in her duty towards the Emond Fielders because of Moiraine. I don't think she was that jealous of Moiraine. Oh it grated on her that Moiraine had the bond of the man she wanted. But it was minor compared to the other.
My avatar isn't glaring at anyone. He's just focused and very serious Not every avatar is a picture-perfect. People aren't in any case
Oh, I know It was a very tongue-in-cheek comment that sounded better in my head that it did online. Sorry
Oh, don't worry; I was tagging along with your comment no need to apologize
I can see that. It still doesn't quite work for me, but I can see how it would work for others.
I love Nynaeve & Lan. I think a big part of it was that she was Wisdom & very young. She wanted companionship, but no one in the Two Rivers was really an option because she was unapproachable both because of her personality as well as her position. She was also stronger willed than most of the men around her but she wanted a man who was her equal. Most of the TR relationships have one of the spouses as the clear leader, but Nynaeve needed a true partnership so she could respect her spouse. Lan came along & she saw a man who was strong but able to work with a woman who was strong. It felt natural to me.
Elayne & Rand, Egwene & Gawyn... Ugh. That's all I really have to say there.
If we're going to talk about odd couples than I think someone should mention Mat and Tylin.
I know that they were a casual couple but they still have the strangest relationship!
