Welp, after not going to LA despite it being the only anni driving distance to me, I suppose I'll have to make this one since it's even closer :p (unless Aleena and I ever get it together enough to propose fall ball in SF) :look:

Any reason. To get me back out to SF would be awesome! Love that city

WELL, I guess I have to go if it's that close.

Hi folk! I'm about to info dump on the region. While we don't have the final details on the event, there are plenty of details to help you plan!

First..... this is Lake Tahoe, CA/NV

And as anyone who has been there can tell you.....
While these are clearly very lovely photos, they are absolutely 100% real. This is what this place looks like. It is one of the prettiest places, I think, on Earth.

Regional Information:
Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America and is located in the Sierra Nevada of the United States. It is located along the border between California and Nevada, west of Carson City. It is the second deepest lake in the USA (after Crater Lake) and is the largest lake by volume in the USA after the Great Lakes. It is located along the border between California and Nevada, west of Carson City.
Elevation at Lake Surface is 6,225 ft (1,897 m). The elevation of the surrounding peaks go up to around 11,000 ft.

Transportation:
Major Interstate Highways:
Interstate 80 and Highway 50
Approximate Drive times:
Carson City, NV - 30 min
Reno, NV - 1 hour - Major Airport
Sacramento, CA - 2 hours- Major Airport
San Francisco, CA - 3.5 hours- Major Airport
Las Vegas, NV - 7.5 hours
Los Angeles, CA - 8 hours (unless you're coming through traffic, which you almost certainly are... in which case I'd plan for 12).
Salt Lake City, UT - 8.5 hours
Portland, OR - 11 hours
Major Airports:
Sacramento International SMF (approx 2 hours drive), Reno-Tahoe International RNO (approx 1 hr drive). RNO has multiple shuttle options from the airport to Lake Tahoe (and back) for those not wishing to rent a car.
Other Transportation Options:
South Lake Tahoe is serviced by Greyhound Bus Line (among others). Amtrak has Trains to Truckee, California (North Shore of Lake Tahoe) with bus routes going to South Shore.

Climate:

Probably cold (average high is mid-40's to mid-50's with lows in the 20s/30s). Possibly not (could be mid-60s). Might be snowing. Might not. I can reasonably state that most of you will probably not choose to go swimming in the alpine lake at this time of year (I can't speak for all of you, though). We'll be up there at the tail end of ski season, though, for those of the snowy persuasion. Elevation at the lake is a little over 6,000 feet (surrounding mountains are higher, obviously). The climate is likely to be very similar to what we have seen at Estes Park, CO. The elevation at the lake is lower, though (about 6,000 ft as opposed to 8,000).

Activities:

This is where the location really, really shines. Lake Tahoe is divided by the California/Nevada border. This means you have access to high end casinos, fine dining, entertainment, no blue laws (aka - you can buy alcohol whenever you dang well feel like it). Walking distance from this there is skiing. Also walking distance from this is the beach. Lake Tahoe is a great place to visit if you're looking to spend money. Lake Tahoe is a great place to visit if you're looking to go on an affordable family vacation. It's great for people who like shiny lights and its great for people who like to feel they're the only ones in the whole world. Those two things are pretty much right next to each other. This location will have something that you like to do.

High End: fine dining, spa facilities, shopping
Sports: fishing, jet skiing, parasailing, horseback riding, hiking, skiing, golfing, rock climbing, white water rafting
Family Friendly: balloon rides, swimming/day at the beach, mini golf, riverboat rides
Adult/Nightlife: casino gambling, shows, clubbing, regional wine tasting
Cultural Tourism: Virginia City, Donner Memorial State Park, oh yeah, and there is a castle among many many other things if you’re inclined to drive about an hour or so to see it.

Right... but how much does it cost to eat/drink here?
Lake Tahoe will have pretty much anything you want at any price point. There are plenty of grocery stores for those inclined to make their own breakfast or have a picnic. Restaurants run the gamut from fast food chain dollar menus to seafood buffets with panoramic views of the lake.

Lake Tahoe may feel remote, but we wont be remote within Lake Tahoe.
You can eat and drink here as cheaply as anywhere else in the USA.

You can eat at local restaurants and have really good food for well under $20 a day. For example:

Friday
Dinner: Ugly Gooey Excellent Nachos at Sprouts Cafe $9
http://www.sproutscafetahoe.com/

Saturday
Breakfast: Breakfast Bagel Sandwich at Rude Brothers Bagels - $6
http://www.rudebrothersbagels.com/
Lunch: Cheese Burger and Fries at Big Daddy's Burgers - $6
http://www.bigdaddysburgerstahoe.com/
Dinner: Dinner w/TarValon.Net - incld in ticket price

Sunday
Breakfast: Biscuits and Gravy at the Red Hut Cafe - $5
http://www.redhutcafe.com/
Lunch: Veggie Sandwich at the Yellow Submarine $6
http://www.tahoeyellowsub.com/
Dinner: Big bowl of pasta (pick your own pasta, sauce, meat & veg) at FastaPasta- $8
http://www.yelp.com/biz/fasta-pasta-south-lake-tahoe?osq=cheap+eats

Monday
Breakfast: Bacon & Egg Breakfast (with pancakes) at IHOP with Tower folk - $6
http://www.ihop.com/

More info on restaurants here:
http://www.tahoesbest.com/Restaurants/south-lake-tahoe-restaurants.htm

Also... again! Grocery stores (which, in California and Nevada, are allowed to sell liquor - so no separate store for that necessary) are all over the place. So are fast food joins and mini-marts. If we're in a hotel, there is a decent chance breakfast might be included. If we're not in a hotel, there is a good chance we're making our own breakfasts. :P

I hope this helps!

No colder than it was in Colorado. :P

Also, as for food - Paleo is very big in the United States right now, and California is always on the forward end of food trends. We have a lot of members who eat paleo, non-gluten, no carb, no fat, low sodium, no iodine, no caffeine, kosher, vegetarian, vegan, no uncooked fruits/veggies diets.... (edited for clarity: not all the same people :look:). Lake Tahoe is a small city, but it is a city. And it is a big food destination. And there are grocery stores of both the generic and granola persuasion. I feel confident saying that people will be able to find what they need.

Also, an important part of figuring out where our group dinner will be held is their ability to accommodate a variety of special needs. But anywhere you go in this region, you're going to be able to find fresh food in abundance. :)

Thanks Eleyan Sedai, but I would need something specifically AIP-compliant. Here in Brisbane we do have a few different Paleo restaurants but not even they are able to cater to AIP (not even a single meal for me), so it's not something I'm willing to leave to chance - I need to know before I make any sort of plans that there are going to be places where I can eat (and enough of them scattered around the place that I won't be confined to one area for the whole trip and miss out on any sightseeing or group activities or whatever). I know it's probably difficult to give any definites before the actual venue is decided upon, but I'd appreciate it being taken into consideration.
