I always figured they started the healing process for her, and by the time she met Elend her walls were already starting to come down? Or something.

I can see that. He's the first person out of the group that is actually nice to her. (I think) so it instills some hope for her.

And the first one to pay attention to HER, not just another person on a team.

But yes, Spook (Lestibournes) does try to get her attention, but that is after first meeting Elend, and he can't say a word to her :cheeseeni:

Elend is the slightly-older rebellious good looking dude. Poor Spook never had a chance.

Well, he isn't the FIRST male person to be nice to her. Lestabournes (forgive me if I'm spelling it wrong. I'm listening, not reading), not to mention Kal, Ham, Dox....
This ... I was really getting vibes from Kelsier except the author kept saying "FATHERLY" over and over again just so I wouldn't get the wrong idea and I still did.

Elend is the slightly-older rebellious good looking dude. Poor Spook never had a chance.
And he's cleaner, more confident, you know.

Also I did finish the book. I guess I'm not too good at read-alongs because I just want to know what happens.

I've read that Sanderson kept really pushing the father thing specifically because some people in his reading groups liked Vin and Kelsier as a couple.

laaaaate but I had read the first Mistborn book years ago, and I've recently started a re-read so I can actually read the rest of the series.

I agree, we're not too far into the book yet.

I also agree about Kel and Vin. My first read, I absolutely thought Vin was going to develop a serious crush

Me too, the first time I read it. I also kind of glossed over their ages. This time it is much more obvious to me that she's a teenager and he's old.

Well that's the thing, I think. He's not an "old dude" by MY standards, and I have a bad habit of self-inserting so I didn't really internalize that Vin is like.... 16?

Yeah I do the same thing when reading, and I personally liked Kelsier much more than Elend, hence why I was shipping them the first time. I think when I first read it, in my mind, she was older and he was younger and less "fatherly." But this reread is much different and it's more obvious to me now.

I never really ‘shipped’ and of the characters. I was way more into the action. It may be a guy thing, haha

I'm surprised that this read I also feel very differently about Kel. I was more sympathetic to his character and his decisions the first time I read it, but now he seems pretty sociopathic to me.

Elia - Same for me. I think it's because we've talked here about his motivations and his attitude towards the nobles, and I never really had that perspective before. I tend to see the "good guys" as good guys and that's it. It's more interesting to see his sociopathic tendencies, I think, but also a bit more disturbing.

Yes, it is so interesting! I do the same re: the good guys. His actions seem so much more sinister now. Or, well... definitely more chilling.
