I started to read the actual book of Words of Radiance, because I just can't wait for my credits to renew, and also I want to start bonding with my books again. :look:

It's been interesting, because I haven't seen a lot of these names spelled out, so sometimes, I'll stop and hesitate on a name before I figure out who it's supposed to be.
 Who was the hardest to figure out?

It doesn't help that Sanderson doesn't set pronunciations for his characters. His philosophy, if I recall correctly, is to say them however you want.

 It also doesn't help that I love studying language and pronunciation.

My husband and I always argue about "Jasnah". I say it with a hard "J" and he says "Yasnah" because of the audiobook.

Yeah, I've heard it as "Yasnah" so many times. She's one of my favorites. :pleased-1: "Jasnah" with a hard "J" sounds pretty too.

It sounds a bit fiercer, to me. "Yasnah" is so soft.

I don't love her, but I admire her character and I loved the twist at the end of the 3rd book so looking forward to that.

I always pronounce Sadeas as Sa-DA-E-as, but that is because I read names in Norwegian-English :look: Same reason it is SIU-AN for me, not SWAN :look:

When I first saw Sadeas spelled out, I wanted to pronounce it "Sah-DAY-as", but the audiobooks say it "SAD-ee-as"

I've always pronounced Siuan as "See-WAN," because that's how it looks to a Spanish-speaker, and Tairen names are very heavily Spanish.

Like Aduiavas, I tend to bring my own native pronunciation into it. So definitely YAHS-nah. And See-yu-AHN. And Sah-DAY-ahs.

I've never heard anyone pronounce Siuan as Swan, btw. That sounds super confusing. :bunny

Well, the audio books have this weird way of pronouncing Siuan... A mix of SWAN, and SWAIN...

I am not good at writing in phonetics :look: It is another thing Norwegian language don't have...

English isn't phonetic, either, though it used to be.

I always read Sadeas SAY-dee-us before listening to the audiobook. And I used to pronounce Adolin as ADD-oh-lin instead of AY-doh-lin. I go both ways on Jasnah.

I used a hard J for Jasnah until I was looking around and saw other people used a Y sound, so that's what I use now. And ADD-o-lin and Suh-DAY-iss. But not a huge "uh" sound, the softer ɜ sound if I remember that correctly. It's been a few years since linguistics class. :look:
