Some random generator long ago :look: told me that the Quenya version of my RL name, is Aduiavas. So you can blame all the extra vowels on the person who made that generator ;)

Actually, it has a lot of versions, with endings for different sexes and stuff, but I just used the root of it. So, when I had to make up a name to use on this site, it was a no-brainer to use that one. Even though many of you are completely unable to pronounce it correctly, or even spell it ;) I still like it :)
My last name is my RL first name ;)

Nymala Ingasy is the name of a rogue character I've played for eons and eons in my D&D game. She's sassy, spunky, speaks her mind and speaks with a funky accent that I cannot reproduce IRL. When friends in my game (what's up, Dria & Nyarin?) found out that I read WoT, they immediately offered to sponsor me as a citizen. I used my RP name so they would "be able to find me" on the boards. (It made sense in my head, ok?) I never thought for a second that I'd answer to "Nym" as a member of the Tower. Surprise, surprise!

Hi everyone. I´m new here, but "why did you pick your name" seems like a good place to start. Now I realize that everyone else here has two names and feel a bit stupid that I leapt here without looking. I´m usually not this impulsive, but Tor.com made me tug my braid and storm out. Tessuna is a nickname I used there. I actually use it whenever I need a nickname, and it is starting to fell like my real name. Nobody ever asked me where and why I picked it. It is actually name of a character in a book called Lemuria by Czech poet Vladimir Holan. I love his poetry, but I love Lemuria even more, because it is... well, not exactly a prose, nor poetry, nor a novel... I don´t know what it is, and that´s why I love it. Anyway, Tessuna as a character is this little mysterious beautiful woman with a love of poetry and this almost childish sense of wonder, she´s smart and thoughtful and basically everything I want to be, so I kept the name to remind myself of that.

Basically I keyboard mashed until something that resembled a name appeared. And then added "al'."

This :look: without the al' :P It didnt sound that good to me :cheeseeni: I guess I had Verin and Mat's names in my head while I was thinking up a name, I only knew I wanted it to start with my RL name's first letter, hence the I

I was listening to a crappy metal band I liked at the time. The name sounded cool.

I was wondering where your name is so familiar from :D

I was really into Buffy and Angel at the time, and loved the character Illyria - although I had never seen it spelled, I assumed it was spelled like I spell my first name. I've since learned there is more to the name Illyria than just that character, but I'm still glad I chose to spell it this way. I can get relatively grumpy over it's pronunciation, though.

My last name came from a name generator. I've never liked it, I just got tired of looking. My husband, who hasn't been active here for many moons, chose the name Alaren Tane - if he ever becomes active again I'll petition for his last name. I like the way Alyria Tane sounds.

I don't have much reason for choosing it. It just sounded pretty!

Narisse was a Wise Woman and Jahar was a Warden in the books. It sounded good strung together as a full name with a slightly different spelling.

babynames.com is every writer's friend

My first name was Alyra Sionn, Alyra means lyre/harp and I love stringed instruments and A names so I picked it. Someone else on Tar Valon already had it though so before I could become a citizen I had to change it. Alora is close to my Star Wars character name (Alore) and it means "My Dream" in the Botswana Bantu language. Sionn is apparently Irish for Fox, and is supposed to be pronounced Shoon but we always pronounce it See-AWN.

Lok used the same site to pick his name, it's a Chinese boys name meaning Joy.

Mine is a bit strange (,to me, anyway)

I found out when I was 18 that Liam is what my parents originally planned to name me when I was born. I don't know why they changed their minds.

I've since learned that LIAM means Guardian or Protector.
And al'Eire, of course, is a tribute to the Emerald Isle.

Hi Tessuna, and welcome!

I worked with a woman back when I was in college many moons ago named Viviana and made it the name of my cleric in Everquest back in the day. Once I hit the coveted level 20 I was able to choose a last name and wanted something French'ish so added L'antreau to it for who knows why :P when I came here, EZboards for whatever reason wouldn't let me have a username of Viviana...but add the extra "n" and all was well  So I've been Vivianna ever since! I'm just glad that I've always been the only Viv! :D Another person tried to do a vivianne I think at one point, but was politely asked to change it :look:

I was originally Hanajima (from Fruits Basket) as it was my nickname in my group of friends. (and no.. it;s no where near my actually name) :P

At some point online I started going by Siera as I've always loved the name so I changed.

I had zero imagination with mine. Fan of the Eddings books and always like the character of Belgarath. As my real name is Gareth I just stuck the Bel on the front too. I was saddened to learn this didn't make me a sorcerer. Kiarc is simply my surname backwards which I've used regularly on other sites and games like Skyrim, Star Trek Online and pretty much anything else where you create a character.

My initials (in my maiden name) was I.B., which made me think of the Norwegian word "ibenholt". In English, that's "ebony".
My last name was "Borgen" (my maiden name), which translated means "the castle".

So my very first online nick, when I needed a full name, was Ebony Castle. (I didn't realise, when I made that at 13 years old, that people would make assumptions on my skin colour based on that nick. :P )

When I joined the site, I modified that nick to make it sound more Sea Folk-ish. Because the Sea Folk are my favorite group/nation in the books. :) So that's how I got to Ebona din Casei.

Oh, here we go.

There is no real inspiration or allusion to my name. I was bored in class during high school, and was just jotting down letter combinations. Chalisea looked good on paper, so I held on to it for no real reason at the time. When I joined the boards and was told to create a WoT-ish name. It seemed like a good place as any to use it. My maiden name on the boards, Ridgedawn, was used because I loved the evocative imagery it conjured for me. When Tannin finally joined the boards, I took his name when we got married (should have done the long name trend and kept my maiden name  ). Venatrix is the feminine form of the Latin venator, meaning "hunter."

Pronunciation wise, it's a bit strange. Said Kal-eh-say-ah, I can see why it's shortened down to just "Sea," which I don't mind. I much prefer it over Chali (because I like the water. :look: )

When I was a youngster (heh!), I'd use faux names at my friends' parties to maintain a bit of anonymity from unwanted attention from other attendees. The one that I liked best was Blu, so I used it on the site. I also like how simple it is--never get any questions about how to pronounce it and nobody ever needs to make a shorter version. I made up the last name for the site. It's basically a spin-off of the word 'eloquent', which to me is a fun word to say (primary reason) and I also like the meaning (though don't always embody it!). Added the al' on the front to WoT it up a bit. And that's that. :)
