Room to Read: Feast of Lights Charity Drive

There were member suggestions aplenty, every one of them as great as the others, and narrowing them all down has been quite the task for Jodea Sedai’s Department of Community Outreach. In the end, all of the charity options were fantastic and we could be proud to help any of them. However, the voting rested on the shoulders of our community, and we couldn’t have picked a more befitting cause for this year’s drive.

Literacy is close to the hearts of book lovers all over the world. We have all had moments in our lives when we realized that reading made a true difference, and many of us have been shaped by the books we’ve read. That’s why we want every person in the world to have the chance to make that same connection. Room to Read, the selected charity, strives to do just that.

Room to Read is a wonderful organization that does a great deal for literacy and educational equality in developing countries. Here is a blurb from their site:

Why literacy and gender equality?

Literacy is the cornerstone of all learning and fundamental for participation in today’s global society, yet 793 million people across the globe lack the ability to read and write. That includes every medicine bottle, employment ad and ballot form they encounter. Of all the illiterate people in the world today, two-thirds are female and over 90 percent live in developing countries.

Educating girls and women is widely acknowledged as the most powerful and effective way to address global poverty. Women who finish secondary school earn more money, have smaller, healthier families, and are more likely to educate their own children—breaking the cycle of illiteracy in one generation.

Room to Read partners with communities across the developing world to promote literacy and gender equality in education by establishing libraries, constructing classrooms, publishing local-language children’s books, training educators and supporting girls’ education.

This year, our goal will be to raise $2500 between December 1st and December 31st. If this goal is met, we will be getting a free week in February, which is always great fun! There will also be a drawing to give some of the donors fun titles for the month of February, as well as Amazon gift certificates. More information about these awesome prices can be found in Jodea’s announcement.

The Department of Community Outreach invites everyone to support the Feast of Lights charity drive this year. Every little bit helps; it truly does! Our success depends on our fantastically generous group jumping in to help this great organization and even greater cause. Whether you donate five or five hundred dollars, you will be making a difference. Let’s once again demonstrate the value of our community and reach that goal together!
