Tower Memes: Part One

Submitted by Mejjad Martnandi on Wed, 02/01/2012 - 18:19

  • Community News

This article started out as a regular article, but it quickly turned into several pages. Therefore it will be cut up into a series of articles, that will expand over the coming months into a more complete guide of the memes.

First, a quick look on the definition of memes. A meme is a cultural expression, an idea, saying or part of knowledge that is preserved within a population. Memes are said to undergo the same principle as genes: evolution. A good meme survives, a bad meme does not. Fire was a good meme! The populations who knew how to use fire survived and prospered.

The Around-the-World Class

  • Community News

The class has had many interesting posts since the class first started. I've posted a few times myself and enjoyed it, so I decided to ask Aryela Sedai why she wanted to start a class that would give others the opportunity for everyone to teach. "I like getting to know about different cultures. Since this is an international community, I figured it would be a nice way to get people to talk about where they're from, or where they've lived."

  • Community News

There were a few issues with last year's survey, the most important being that there were some issues with security. To solve this, the Department of Administration has chosen to use the LimeSurvey software, a very reputable survey software that has a lot of added security features - thus making your results quite a bit more secure. While we are using the LimeSurvey software, everything is hosted through our site, so your results are completely secure!

January Wrap-Up

  • Community News

Registration for Anni 2012 opened up, and so far there have been nearly 120 registrations. Naturally, some people will be forced to cancel, but we’re hoping that it’s going to be a big Anni this year in Denver come March 29th. Another small change occurred in the Department of Events & Conferences this month; the position of Conference Coordinator, held by Esteban since June of 2009, was retired. Thank you for all of your hard work, Esteban!

A Guide to Moderating Current Events

Submitted by Miridyth Al'Landerin on Wed, 02/01/2012 - 18:14

  • Community News

The members here at the Tower have called current Events (CE) many things, from fun and informative to absolutely the worst forum to post in. It has survived as long as some members can remember despite criticism and, at one time, a "permission only" forum. The rules for posting in this forum are kept in a "sticky" at the top and it is the wise poster who reads and truly understands them. However, the Moderator of Current Events needs to be on top of not only the rules but also how to implement them fairly and objectively.

It also means that it's time for the Feast of Lights, both the charity drive as well as the event hosted by the Outreach Activities Team. Something that's been a little out of the ordinary this December is the insane amount of raisings that have happened (11, the most since June!), which are always exciting things for the community.

Room to Read: Feast of Lights Charity Drive

Submitted by Stephen Lightheart on Thu, 12/01/2011 - 18:34

  • Community News

There were member suggestions aplenty, every one of them as great as the others, and narrowing them all down has been quite the task for Jodea Sedai’s Department of Community Outreach. In the end, all of the charity options were fantastic and we could be proud to help any of them. However, the voting rested on the shoulders of our community, and we couldn’t have picked a more befitting cause for this year’s drive.

  • Community News

To start off, our annual Membership Clean Up started in the very beginning of the month. Membership Sedai (aka Serenla Sedai of the illustrious Brown Ajah) posted a thread in the Hallways and the Barracks, respectively, for the boys and girls of the Tower to post in. You had until November 20th to post in these threads, and if you didn’t, then you should be expecting an e-mail from membership@tarvalon.net in your inbox!
